The Moral Status of Animals

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se bude zabývat morálním statusem zvířat. Bude se snažit ukázat, z jakého důvodu jsou zvířata vnímána podřadněji než lidé a jaký vztah vůbec k sobě člověk a zvíře mají, jak v dnešní době, tak i v různých etapách historie. Nejvíce tu budou nastíněny myšlenky filozofa Petra Singera, který schopnosti cítit bolest nebo radost přikládá největší význam pro připsání morálního statusu zvířatům. Dále se práce zaměří na objasnění termínu ,speciesism, , protože každý filozof ho chápe jiným způsobem a v problému připsání morálního statusu je důležitý. V dalších částech budou představeni filozofové, kteří ve svých článcích pojednávají o morálním statusu zvířat, o vztahu mezi člověkem a zvířetem a také se zabývají termínem druhová nadřazenost, a tím reagují na Singera. Tímto představením jednotlivých filozofů a jejich názorů, se nám ukáže kdo se Singerem souhlasí a naopak kdo ho kritizuje.

Abstract:

This Bachelor thesis deals with the moral status of animals. It aims at showing the reason why the animals are percived as less valuable then human beings and what kind of relation exists between human being and animals nowadays and during different periods of history. The major part sketches the thoughts of philosopher Peter Singer, who says that it is the ability to feel the pain and pleasure what is the most significant element in giving the moral status to animals. Besides, this work is focused on explaining the meaning of speciesism, because it is conceptualized differently by different philisophers and it is the crucial term in the problem of ascribing the moral status. In next chapters I will introduce philosophers, which in their works deal with the moral status of animals, or about the relation between the human being and animal and they dealing with concept ,speciesism, and thus responding to Singer. By this presentation of individual philophers and their opinions we will be shown, who agrese with Singer and who, on the other hand, criticise him.
