Double verb prefixation in Czech and Bulgarian language

Abstract:

Tato magisterská diplomová práce se zabývá dvojitou prefixaci u sloves v češtině a bulharštině. Problém je zkoumán z pohledu formální sémantiky. Předvedena je vektorová prostorová sémantika předložek (Zwarts & Winter, 2000 a Zwarts, 2005), která je aplikována na české a bulharské předložky. Na základě skutečnosti, že prostorové prefixy v češtině a bulharštině korelují významově i morfologicky s prostorovými PP, je sémantika předpon popsána pomocí vektorové prostorové sémantiky. Uvedeny jsou argumenty proti aspektuální povaze asymetrie mezi cílovými a zdrojovými prefixy, na níž upozornila Hana Filipová (2003, def.29). Ve zvláštních kapitolech jsou analyzovány opozice teličnost / ateličnost a perfektivnost / imperfektivnost, jejichž rozeznání je podstatné pro uchopení sémantiky aspektu. Předvedení vektorové monotónnosti a modifikační podmínky Zwartseho a Wintra a jejich aplikování na bulharská a česká data nám umožnilo prokázat, že rozdíl v monotónnosti je důvod pro omezení na dvojitou prefixaci.

Abstract:

This Master thesis deals with double verb prefixation in Czech and Bulgarian language. The problem is investigated from the view of formal semantics. In the very beginning I present the Vector space semantics of prepositions (Zwarts & Winter, 2000 and Zwarts, 2005) and apply it to Czech and Bulgarian prepositions. After that on the grounds of the fact, that space prefixes in Czech and Bulgarian language correlate sematically and morphologically to space PP, the semantics of prepositions is defined by the vector space semantics. Moreover, I give arguments against claim of Hana Filip (2003, def. 29) about aspectual nature of Goal-source telicity asymmetry. In particular chapters in this thesis are analyzed counterparts telicity / atelicity and perfektivity / imperfectivity, whose differentiation is very important in order to puzzle out the semantics of verbal aspect. In conclusion I perform the Zwarts-Winter´s vector monotonicity and modification condition and then I apply them to Bulgarian and Czech double prefixed verbs, so that I show the reason for the restriction of double prefixation is the diference in their monotonicity.
