Analysis and deployment of deep packet inspection solution in a small-size network

Abstract:

This thesis describes the monitoring of network traffic in a small business environment, the aim of which is to provide a basic overview of network status with focus on the security. This monitoring is conducted by inspecting network packets with the deep packet inspection method. The content of the theoretical part is an introduction to principles of network security monitoring, data collection and the deep packet inspection method. The practical part consists of an introduction to Security Onion distribution with the tools that are part of it. This paper describes the course of the deployment of this distribution along with the description of the work in the tested environment. Later on it introduces reader to the basic usage of Security Onion, also it summarizes setup of selected tools and it gives an example of a possible use in practice.

Abstract:

Táto práca sa zaoberá problematikou monitorovania sieťovej prevádzky v prostredí malej firmy, ktorej cieľom je poskytnúť základný prehlaď stavu siete so zameraním na bezpečnosť’. Toto monitorovanie je vykonávané inšpekciou sieťových paketov za pomoci metódy hĺbkovej analýzy paketov. Obsah teoretickej časti práce slúži ako úvod k problematike monitorovania sieťovej prevádzky, metódam zberu dát a k samotnej metóde hĺbkovej analýzy paketov. Praktická časť pozostáva z predstavenia distribúcie Security Onion vrátane nástrojov, ktoré ju tvoria. Táto práca popisuje priebeh nasadenia tejto distribúcie spolu s popisom prác v testovanom prostredí. Ďalej zoznamuje čitateľa so základným použitím Security Onion, taktiež sa venuje zhrnutiu ako nastaviť vybrané nástroje a uvádza aj príklad možného použitia v praxi.
