The cabalistic elements in the narrative prose of Jogre Luis Borges

Abstract:

The aim of this diploma thesis is to demonstrate and consequently analyse the presence of cabalistic elements in the prose of Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges (1899 – 1986). The first part of the paper is dedicated to the relationship, which Borges established during his life with the Jewish world and its mysticism and to introduction of the reader into the teaching of Kabbalah. The information for this part of the paper is drawn from the publication of Edna Aizenberg: El tejedor del Aleph y otros ensayos (The Aleph Weaver, 1997), Jaime Alazraki: Borges and The Kabbalah (2009) and other authorities in the question of Jewish mysticism, such as Gershom Scholem or Rabbi Simon Bar Johai, who was traditionally thought to be the author of The Zohar (Book of Light). The second part of this paper is pointed at searching and analysing the elements in the specific books by Borges, for example El Aleph (The Aleph, 1949), Ficciones (Fictions, 1944), Otras Inquisiciones (Other Inquisitions, 1952) and other. It focuses on the following aspects: the impact of the Holy Spirit on literature, the position of God and his characteristics, the authorship and the sephirotic structure of Borgesʼ stories taking inspiration from the Kabbalah, alphabetical and numerical symbolism, the existence and meaning of the True Name of God, the nature of the Holy Books, the creation of man or the reincarnation.

Abstract:

Cieľom tejto diplomovej práce bolo preukázať a následne analyzovať prítomnosť kabalistických prvkov v próze argentínskeho spisovateľa Jorge Luisa Borgesa (1899 – 1986). Prvá časť práce je venovaná vzťahu, ktorý si Borges za roky svojho života vybudoval k židovskému svetu a jeho mystike, a následnemu uvedeniu čitateľa do učenia Kabaly. Informácie v tejto časti práce sú založené na publikácií Edny Aizenberg: El tejedor del Aleph y otros ensayos (Tkáč Alefu a iných poviedok, 1997), Jaime Alazrakiho: Borges and The Kabbalah (Borges a Kabala ,2009) a ostatných autorít v otázkach židovskej mistiky akými boli Gershom Scholem alebo Rabbi Šimon Bar Jochaj a jemu prisudzovaný Zohar (Kniha Žiary). Druhá časť práce je zameraná na vyhľadanie a analýzu kabalistických prvkov v konkrétnych Borgesových dielach, ako napríklad Alef (El Aleph, 1949), Fikcie (Ficciones, 1944) či Iné pátrania (Otras inquisiciones, 1952) a iné. Pozornosť je venovaná nasledovným aspektom: vplyv Ducha Svätého na literatúru, postavenie Boha a jeho vlasnosti, autorstve a sefirotickej štruktúre Borgesových poviedok prebratej z Kabaly, písomnej a číselnej symbolike, existencii a významu pravého Božieho Mena, povahe Svätých kníh, stvoreniu človeka či reinkarnácii.
