Analysis of the Dependence of Economic Growth on Investment in Human Health

Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce je analyzovat závislost ekonomického růstu na investicích do lidského zdraví. V teoretické části práce se nejprve zabývám pojmem investice do zdraví a vzájemnými vztahy mezi vzděláním a zdravím, jako důležitými atributy lidského kapitálu. Pozornost věnuji také zdravotní politice v České republice a programu evropské komise na podporu zdraví. Dále se zaměřuji na zdravotní pojištění a s ním související problém morálního hazardu a informační asymetrie. Závěr teoretické části je věnován ekonomickému růstu, jako jedné z klíčových proměnných v mé práci. V praktické části analyzuji, jaké proměnné, představující investice do lidského zdraví, mají vliv na ekonomický růst, který je zde vyjádřen pomocí produktivity práce. Model je analyzován za pomoci průřezových dat sesbíraných za rok 2014. Analýza metodou nejmenších čtverců prokázala vliv na produktivitu práce u proměnných zastupující veřejné a soukromé výdaje do zdravotnictví a výdaje na alkoholické nápoje, tabák a omamné látky V závěru práce, je úpravou základního modelu, zjišťován vztah mezi produktivitou a očekávanou délkou života, který se ukázal být jako statisticky významný.

Abstract:

The aim of this bachelor‘s thesis is to analyze the dependence of economic growth on investment in human health. In the theoretical part, I deal with the concepts of health investment and the relationship between health and education as important attributes of human capital. I also pay attention to health policy in the Czech Republic and The European Commission's Health Promotion Program. Furthermore, I focus on health insurance and the related problem of moral hazard and information asymmetry. I conclude the theoretical part by discussing economic growth, a key variable in my thesis. In the practical part I analyze which among the variables that represent investment in human health have an influence on economic growth as expressed by labour productivity. The model is analyzed using cross-sectional data collected in 2014. Least squares regression analysis revealed a impact on labour productivity in variables representing public and private spending on health and expenditure on alcoholic beverages, tobacco and narcotics. The thesis conclusion is dedicated the relationship between productivity and life expectancy, that has proven to be statistically significant by virtue of modifications made to the basic model.
