The image of the Russo-Japanese War in the Czech press".

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je vymezit, jaký obraz Japonska byl zprostředkován českým dobo-vým tiskem během rusko-japonské války skrze zkoumání zaujatého vyjadřování tis-ku a přítomnosti stereotypů v něm. Pozorován je vývoj hlavních stereotypních linií, které zkoumaný tisk sdílel a jejich návaznost na průběh konfliktu. Práce zohledňuje tři vybrané zástupce českého tisku – dva proruské, z toho jeden deník a časopis, a jeden dělnický časopis. Závěr práce shrnuje vypozorovaný vývoj těchto linií a nabízí základ pro představu vnímání Japonska v této době.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to determine what kind of image of Japan was facilitated by the Czech press during the Russo-Japanese war, through the examination of stereo-types and fixed ideas about the Japanese, present in the press. Correlation of these fixed ideas with major events during the war is also considered. The thesis analyses three representatives of the Czech press – two of which are influenced by the Russian point of view and one socialistic journal, critical of Russia. The conclusion of this the-sis offers a general view on the development of said stereotypes and ideas during the conflict and provides a foundation for establishing the collective image of Japan in the Czech-speaking society at that time.
