Areas and volumes in mathematics: development and comparison of methods

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá problematikou obsahů a objemů v matematice. Práce je rozdělena na dvě části. První část popisuje historický vývoj od počátků ve starověkém Egyptě až po moderní přístupy matematické analýzy 20. století. Podrobněji je rozebrána konstrukce Riemannova určitého integrálu. Ve druhé části práce jsou řešeny konkrétní příklady v návaznosti na témata z první části práce (Pythagorova věta, kvadratura mnohoúhelníku, kruhu a paraboly, aplikace určitého integrálu). Práce je doplněna vlastnoručně kreslenými obrázky.

Abstract:

The Diploma thesis deals with issues of areas and volumes in mathematics. The thesis is divided into two parts. First part describes the historical development from beginnings in ancient Egypt to modern approaches of mathematical analysis in 20th century. Riemann’s construction of definite integral is examined in detail. In the second part of the thesis there are solved specific problems in connection to the topics of the first part (Pythagoras’ theorem, squaring the polygon, circle and parabola, application of definite integral). The thesis is supplemented by handmade pictures.
