How Not to Prepare Majales: A Sociological Analysis of Czechoslovak Student Unrest in May 1956

Abstract:

Diplomová práca je analýzou študentských Majáles, ktoré sa udiali v Bratislava a Prahe v Máji 1956. Tradičný karneval, zakázaný od roku 1948, bol oživený v roku 1956, keď ho študenti premenili na demonštráciu nespokojnosti s komunistickým režimom. Práca, postavená na teoretickom rámci inšpirovanom Shilsovou analýzou vzťahov medzi centrálnym a periférnym hodnotovým systémom a teóriou performancie Jeffrey C. Alexandra, rozkrýva súvislosti, ktoré viedli k oživeniu osláv. Analyzuje symbolický obsah, ktorý študenti komunikovali prostredníctvom sloganov a alegórií pokúša sa odhaliť ich „dokumentárny“ význam. Posledný kapitola je napokon štúdiou významotvorného procesu, prostredníctvom ktorého bol vytvorený význam Majáles v československých a zahraničných médiách. Diplomová práca argumentuje, že Majáles boli výsledkom nestability symbolického centra vtedajšieho Východného bloku , ktorá sa rozšírila do krajín východnej Európy. Kultúrna kríza, ktorá nasledovala, sa však rýchlo ocitla pod kontrolou režimu – no nie bez obetí na oboch stranách.

Abstract:

The thesis presents a sociological analysis of student Majales in Bratislava and Prague in May 1956. These traditional student carnivals, banned since 1948, were turned into playful demonstrations of dissatisfaction with the Communist regime, which, in the end, led to further abolishment of the celebrations until mid-1960s. The thesis, based on theoretical framework inspired by Edward Shils’s writings no central and peripheral value systems and Jeffrey C. Alexander’s theory of performance, explores the cultural situation that led to the revival of Majales. It investigates the symbolic content communicated by the students in the course of both parades and attempts to discover their underlying, documentary meaning. The last chapter presents an analysis of the framing process Majales underwent in Czechoslovak and foreign press as well as the aftermath of the event. The thesis argues that Majales were a result of instability of institutional and symbolic centre of the Eastern Bloc that spread via network of intellectual entrepreneurs throughout East European countries. Cultural crisis that ensued was, however, subdued by the Communist Party – but not without sacrifices.
