The Influence of Domain-specific Knowledge on the Quality of Translation

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá vlivem překladatelovy odborné znalosti na kvalitu překladu. Práce je založena na problematice překladatelské kompetence a jejích komponent, zejména extralingvistické kompetence. V práci je blíže představen model překladatelské kompetence od výzkumné skupiny PACTE, jejíž poznatky i metodologie byly využity pro praktický výzkum. Dále se práce věnuje různým přístupům k extralingvistické kompetenci a odborné znalosti (znalosti oboru překládaného textu), názorům na inkluzi odborných témat do studia překladatelství a charakteristice terminologie v odborných textech. Hlavní část práce tvoří praktický výzkum, při němž pět studentů druhého ročníku magisterského oboru Překladatelství anglického jazyka překládalo texty z oblasti informačních technologií z angličtiny do češtiny. Studenti byli rozděleni na dvě skupiny dle specializace: referenční skupinu překladatelů IT a skupinu překladatelů ostatních druhů textů. Přeložené texty byly podrobeny kontrole kvality, na jejímž základě byly vypočítány indikátory celkové kvality překladu, jazykové kvality a terminologické kvality, přičemž pozornost byla věnována i výskytu terminologických a jazykových chyb v textech. Dle výsledků provedeného experimentu se zdá, že lepší odborná znalost může pozitivně ovlivnit kvalitu překladu, a to zejména kvalitu terminologickou určenou na základě počtu terminologických chyb v textu. Ačkoli rozdíl v celkové kvalitě překladů od překladatelů IT a ostatních překladatelů nebyl zcela jednoznačný, texty překladatelů IT obsahovaly asi dvakrát až čtyřikrát méně terminologických chyb než texty ostatních překladatelů. Současně byl zjištěn kladný vliv psychologických faktorů, jako je motivace či pozitivní přístup k překládanému textu. Cílem této práce je přispět do diskuze o významu odborné znalosti při překladu odborných textů, zejména pro účely koncipování výuky translatologie.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with the influence of domain-specific knowledge on the quality of specialised translation. The thesis is based on the notion of translation competence and its components, especially extralinguistic competence. A model of translation competence by PACTE group is outlined; this model (including PACTE´s methodology) is subsequently used in the practical research. Furthermore, the theoretical part of the thesis discusses various approaches to extralinguistic competence and domain-specific knowledge, models of integrating specialised discourse into translator training, and characteristics of terminology in specialised texts. The main part of the thesis is dedicated to practical research: comparing texts from the field of Information Technologies translated from English into Czech by five second-year translation students. The students were divided into two groups according to their specialisation: a reference IT translators´ group and a group of translators specialising in different types of texts. On the basis of a professional quality assessment, indicators of overall translation quality, language quality and terminological quality were calculated. Moreover, attention was paid to occurrence of errors. The results of the experiment indicate that better domain-specific knowledge may positively influence overall translation quality, and, even more so, terminological quality of the text. Even though the differences between overall quality of translation by translators of IT texts and other translators were not conclusive, IT translators´ texts contained approximately two to four times fewer terminology errors than other translators´ texts. At the same time, a positive influence of psychological factors such as motivation and involvement was found. The aim of the thesis is to contribute to the discussion about the importance of domain-specific knowledge in specialised translation, namely for the purpose of translator training.
