Selected aspects of the ecology of the native and nonnative populations of the genus Neogobius in the longitudinal profile of the Danube

Abstract:

The invasion of Neogobius fishes to the middle and upper course of the Danube River, which has been intensified especially in the recent two decades, stimulated a high number of ecological studies aimed at their ecology in the new environment. However, this is the first study based on a comparative approach – selected population characteristics of the native and non-native populations of N. fluviatilis, N. gymnotrachelus, N. kessleri and N. melanostomus were compared to reveal factors promoting their invasive success. All four Neogobius species established viable populations in the non-native range. The overall density of the genus was much higher than in the native range. The species dominance corresponded to the type of prevailing substrate, which was sandy or gravel beach in the native range and riprap in the non-native range. Therefore the dominant Neogobius species in the native range was N. fluviatilis whereas the non-native range was dominated by N. kessleri and N. melanostomus. Only about 1/3 of Neogobius spp. individuals were collected during single pass electrofishing in a section with riprap bottom substrate, which should be taken into account when considering their real abundance. The higher availability of macrozoobenthos in the upper and middle Danube seems to be an important factor influencing some characteristics of non-native populations. Neogobius kessleri and N. melanostomus grew faster and reached in average bigger size in the non-native range. Except N. gymnotrachelus, all Neogobius species were in better somatic condition in the non-native range. The difference in food resources was apparent in the composition of diet as well – while the diet of the non-native populations was based largely on amphipods, the native populations commonly utilized molluscs (experimentally proven to be less attractive for N. melanostomus than amphipods) and fish. Some differences in external morphology between the native and non-native population of N. melanostomus were explained with regards to the availability and type of used prey. Different frequencies of pectoral fin ray number are potentially explained by a founder effect with regards to a supposedly low number of population founding individuals transferred to the upper Danube by a ship transport.

Invázia zástupcov rodu Neogobius do stredného a horného toku Dunaja, ktorá sa zintenzívnila najmä počas posledných dvoch desaťročí, podnietila vznik množstva štúdií zameraných na ekológiu rodu v novom prostredí. Predložená práca je prvou štúdiou, ktorá aplikuje prístup založený na porovnaní populačných charakteristík pôvodných a nepôvodných populácií štyroch druhov rodu – N. fluviatilis, N. gymnotrachelus, N. kessleri a N. melanostomus. Všetkým štyrom šíriacim sa druhom rodu sa v nepôvodnej oblasti rozšírenia podarilo vybudovať životaschopné populácie. Celková početnosť rodu je výrazne vyššia v nepôvodnom areáli rozšírenia. Rozdielny typ prevládajúceho substrátu dna spôsobil rozdiely v druhových pomeroch medzi areálmi – kým v pôvodnej oblasti početne dominuje N. fluviatilis (preferuje jemnejší substrát), v nepôvodnej oblasti sú to N. kessleri a N. melanostomus (preferujú balvanitý substrát). Pri elektrolove v balvanitom substráte (záhoze) s množstvom interstícií je potrebné vziať do úvahy zníženú účinnosť tejto vzorkovacej metódy. Pomocou elektrolovu sa uloví približne len asi 1/3 rýb skutočne prítomných v prelovovanom úseku. Vyššia biomasa makrozoobentosu v hornom a strednom Dunaji sa zdá byť dôležitým faktorom ovplyvňujúcim viaceré charakteristiky miestnych nepôvodných populácií. N. kessleri a N. melanostomus rastú v nepôvodnej oblasti rýchlejšie a dosahujú vyššie priemerné veľkosti. S výnimkou N. gymnotrachelus je v tejto oblasti pre všetky druhy charakteristická lepšia telesná kondícia. Rozdiel v potravnej ponuke sa prejavil aj v zložení potravy – kým diéta populácií v hornom a strednom Dunaji (nepôvodných) je založená hlavne na Amphipoda, populácie v dolnom Dunaji (pôvodné) využívajú vo väčšej miere i menej atraktívne Mollusca a ryby. Niektoré odlišnosti v externej morfológii pôvodnej a nepôvodnej populácie N. melanostomus je taktiež možné vysvetliť rozdielnou dostupnosťou a iným typom potravy. Naopak, rozdiel vo frekvenciách počtu plutvových lúčov medzi populáciami je potenciálne vysvetliteľný efektom zakladateľa populácie, ak platí hypotéza o šírení Neogobius spp. pomocou lodnej dopravy.
