The film Midnight in Paris and its didactic potential

Abstract:

The diploma thesis deals with the film Midnight in Paris (2011) where the well-known director, Woody Allen, expresses his deep and nostalgic love for Paris. The aim of the thesis is to prove, demonstrate and clarify the didactic potential of the film. The theoretical part is concerned with the themes of the film and his author, and primarily, with the historic, cultural and artistic context of the period called "Belle Époque" (1890s) and the era of 1920s, which are two basic historical periods presented in the film. According to the topics of the film, we introduce mainly the visual arts of 1890s and the artistic movements of 1920s, including the society of American expatriates (the Lost Generation) staying in Paris at that time. The cultural context introduction is followed by the biographies of the corresponding artists who appear or are mentioned in the film. The aim of the analytical part is to compare the characters presented in the film with their real historical counterparts (their model personalities), and, also, with the historical reality in general. The thesis studies their life in Paris and presents detailed information which can help to substantiate and evaluate the authenticity of the film. Woody Allen is considerably close to historical reality, which proves the mentioned didactic potential of the film and which is also utilized in the activities proposed in the final didactic part.

Diplomová práce se zabývá filmem Půlnoc v Paříži (2011), ve kterém známý režisér Woody Allen vyjadřuje svou hlubokou nostalgickou lásku k Paříži. Cílem práce je prokázat a objasnit didaktický potenciál filmu. Teoretická část se zaměřuje na tematiku a autora filmu, a především na historický, kulturní a umělecký kontext období zvaného Belle Époque (léta 1890) a období 20. let, což jsou dvě základní historické éry představené ve filmu. Dle témat filmu představujeme především malířství let 1890 a výtvarné směry a uměleckou společnost amerických emigrantů (Ztracenou generaci) let dvacátých, kdy v Paříži působí mnoho umělců z ciziny. Následují životopisy příslušných osobností, které se objevují ve filmu nebo jsou tam zmíněny. Předmětem analytické části je srovnání umělců představených ve filmu s jejich reálnými historickými protějšky a historickou realitou obecně. Studujeme jejich život v Paříži a předkládáme detailní informace, které nám umožňují prokázat a ocenit věrohodnost filmu. Woody Allen je značně blízko historické realitě, což dokazuje zmíněný didaktický potenciál filmu, kterého využívají i navržené aktivity v didaktické části práce.
