Abstract:

Diplomová práce Like jako vycpávkové slovo v americké akademické mluvené angličtině pojednává o jednom druhu vycpávkového slova, který se hojně vyskytuje v americké mluvené angličtině. Vycpávková slova jsou slova, která ztratila svůj lexikální význam a vyznačují se především svou pragmatickou funkcí. V češtině jsou to slova jako například vlastně, prostě, takže nebo jakože. V angličtině se pak vyskytují vycpávková slova jako you know, actually, basically nebo right. Tato slova jsou charakteristická pro mluvený projev, kde mluvčímu pomáhají vytvářet spoje mezi výpověďmi a vyplnit místa, kde by jinak byla pauza. Používání like jako vycpávkového slova je vnímáno spíše negativně, jako znak nevyzrálého mluveného projevu charakteristického pro mladší věkové kategorie. Práce zkoumá pragmatické funkce like z hlediska pozice v replice, věkové skupiny mluvčích, druh slov v okolí like, typu řečové situace a komunikačního záměnu. Mluvčí používá like, když chce zeslabit význam následujícího slova, když váhá, co říct, když se opravuje nebo parafrázuje, co už řekl. Dále se like používá k uvedení příkladu, přibližné hodnoty, hyperboly a metafory. Může napomáhat vytváření spojů mezi výpověďmi, ale také narušovat souvislost projevu. Like se ve spojitosti se slovesem to be používá k uvozování přímé řeči. Tyto funkce byly pojmenovány jako marker of hesitancy, marker of inaccuracy, marker of self-repair, marker of rephrasing, marker of quotation, marker of exemplification, marker of approximation, marker of incoherence, marker of interactivity a marker of hyperbole. Výzkum je založen na kvantitativní a kvalitativní analýze korpusu mluvené akademické angličtiny University of Michigan.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis Like as a Filler in Academic Spoken American English, investigates pragmatic functions of like as a filler. Like is a very common feature of spoken American English. Its use in the spoken discourse is not based on its lexical meaning, but on its pragmatic functions. Like can be used as a hesitation device, when the speaker thinks what to say and how to put it. It can contribute to the coherence of the discourse by providing a link between ideas. On the other hand, when overused, it may impede coherence and have negative impact on the listener. Further, like may relax meaning of the words, which it precedes. It can be used to introduce exemplification, approximation, direct speech, hyperbole, and metaphor. The pragmatic functions have been defined as a marker of hesitation, a marker of inaccuracy, a marker of self-repair, a marker of rephrasing, a marker of quotation, a marker of exemplification, a marker of approximation, a marker of incoherence, a marker of interactivity and a marker of hyperbole. However, like is perceived rather negatively, as a feature of bad language, associated with adolescent speech. The research is based on the analysis of the Michigan Corpus of academic spoken English. At the same time, it is believed that the thesis contributes to the investigation of academic spoken English.
