Jihadist information operations in cyberspace towards NATO member states

Anotace:

Tato diplomová práce analyzuje informační operace dvou vybraných džihádistických skupin, Al Káidy a Islámského státu, v kybernetickém prostoru se zaměřením na členské státy NATO. Využívá k tomu koncept amerického ministerstva obrany (DoD), které identifikuje pět klíčových a devět podpůrných prvků tvořící informační operace. Tyto prvky jsou operacionalizovány tak, aby odpovídaly současnému informační-mu prostředí, ve kterém operují vybrané džihádistické skupiny. Nově vzniklé prvky jsou poté porovnány na základě jejich podobností a rozdílností. Výsledkem je komparace podobností a rozdílností jednotlivých prvků informačních operací Al Káidy a Islámského státu a zhodnocení jejich bezpečnostních implikací pro státy NATO.

Abstract:

This thesis analyses the information operations of two selected jihadist groups, Al Qaeda and the Islamic State, in cyberspace, focusing on NATO member states. It uses the concept of the US Department of Defense (DoD), which identifies five key and nine supporting elements that make up an information operation. These elements are operationalized to suit the current information environment in which selected jihadist groups operate. The newly created characteristics are then compared on the basis of their similarities and differences. It results in a comparison of the similarities and differences between the various elements of information operations pursued by Al Qaeda and the Islamic State. Furthermore, it assesses the security implications of those operations for NATO countries.
