Goth scene from a gender standpoint

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce si klade za cíl analyzovat okruh problémů souvisejících s genderem a sexualitou, které se vyskytují na gotické scéně (též označované jako subkultura). Skupina gotiků na první pohled poutá svým stylem, jenž bývá popisován adjektivy „pochmurný“ nebo „temný“. Důležitým rysem vizuality tohoto stylu je také sexuální nevyhraněnost a značná přítomnost prvků tradičně asociovaných s feminitou. V gotické vizáži a v některých projevech dochází k podlamování norem či stereotypů souvisejících s genderem a sexualitou. Hlavní pozornost je tedy směřována k gender aspektu této scény a k teoriím, pomocí nichž může být daná problematika nazírána - nejdůležitější z nich je performativní teorie Judith Butlerové, která poskytuje teoretický základ k jejímu porozumění. Gender jevy v případě gotické scény ve velké míře souvisejí se stylem. Proto je část práce věnována gotickému stylu a také teoriím popisujícím subkulturní styl, jeho performativitu, šíření prostřednictvím sociální mimeze a dalším, se stylem souvisejícím konceptům. Pro vykreslení celistvého obrazu je část práce věnována nejdůležitějším normám a hodnotám gotické scény. Narušování genderových stereotypů vizáží a vystupováním, k němuž dochází na gotické scéně zejména pod vlivem stylu nakloněnému „bizarnosti“, může být příkladem podporujícím performativní teorii. Androgynní vzhled a některé způsoby jednání gotiků poukazují na sociální konstruovanost genderu.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis aims to analyze questions about gender at the gothic scene (also often labeled as subculture). This social group attracts an attention due to its style, that is often called as „dark“ or „sombre“. An important feature of that style is sexual ambiguity and also considerable inherence of elements conventionally associated with feminity. That is why the main attention is pointed to gender aspect of this scene and to theories, that enable to make sense of this problem from a sociological point of view. For this thesis is the most important the theory of performativity from Judith Butler, that helps us better understand the problems. In the case of gothic scene are gender features interconnected with gothic style. Thereby is a part of this thesis dedicated to gothic style and theories describing subcultural style, its performativity, spread per social mimesis and related concepts. It was necessary to devote a part of this paper also to the most important ideas of gothic movement, because it brings more integrated picture of the scene. Disturbing of gender norms (by visage and behaviour) taking place at the gothic scene in terms of gothic style - that is disposed to „bizarrerie“, could be considered as an example supporting theory of performativity. Androgynous gothic appearance and some styles of beaviour point to social construction of gender.
