The Serbo-Bulgarian Crisis of 1885, as Reflected by Czech Press of the Time

Abstract:

„Velká východní krize“ v letech 1875–78 znovu otevřela tzv. východní otázku. Podstata „východní otázky“ spočívala v boji o rozdělení území upadající osmanské říše. V roce 1878 se zástupci velmocí pokusili novou krizi urovnat kompromisním řešením, které na sebe vzalo podobu berlínské smlouvy. Již brzy se ale ukázalo, že uspořádání Balkánu, na kterém se usnesl berlínský kongres, není cestou k trvalému míru v této oblasti. Prvním důvodem bylo narůstající sebevědomí nového balkánského národního státu Bulharského knížectví, které se začalo vymaňovat ze své závislosti na Rusku. Součástí nové aktivní politiky Sofie byla též snaha osvobodit se z pout berlínské smlouvy, která zabraňovala národnímu sjednocení Bulharů. Toto úsilí vyvrcholilo převratem v Plovdivu roku 1885 a spojením Bulharského knížectví a Východní Rumélie. Zjevné porušení berlínské smlouvy vzápětí znamenalo konec krátkodobého míru na Balkáně a následně i krizi velmocenských vztahů v Evropě. Nejostřeji se proti převratu v Plovdivu postavilo sousední Srbské království. Vztahy mezi Bělehradem a Sofií utrpěly ránu již v době, kdy vznikalo Bulharské knížectví. Nový bulharský národní stát zahrnoval totiž i některá území, na které si činilo nárok Srbsko. Neshody mezi oběma státy vyústily nejprve v diplomatické krizi roku 1884 a hned následujícího roku srbsko-bulharskou válkou. Česká veřejnost se v té době nacházela ve víru sporů mezi hlavním politickým proudem staročechů a sílící a stále sebevědomější mladočeskou opozicí. Události na Balkáně přesto sledovala velmi bedlivě. Český tisk přinášel zprávy a komentáře k dění v jihovýchodní Evropě na předních stranách po celou dobu trvání krize. Na balkánské události reagovaly přitom jednotlivé české noviny odlišně, podle politického zaměření redakce. Hlavní rozdíl je patrný mezi mladočeským a straročeským tiskem. Staročeské noviny se zabývaly úlohou, jakou by mělo na Balkáně hrát Rakousko-Uhersko. Mladočeský tiskový orgán Národní listy oproti tomu viděl v politice velmocí pouze snahu zabraňovat přirozenému vývoji na Balkáně směřujícímu k osvobození národů žijících na území osmanské říše. Podle Národních listů bylo jedinou mocností, která by v tomto smyslu mohla pozitivně ovlivnit dění v jihovýchodní Evropě, carské Rusko, „patron jižních Slovanů“. Obecně řečeno nebyl srbsko-bulharský spor českým tiskem vnímán ani tolik jako konflikt mající své ohnisko na Balkáně, ale spíše jako boj velmocí o vliv v této oblasti.

Abstract:

The „Great Eastern Crisis“ of 1875–78 reopened the so called „Eastern question“ on how to divide the territory of the declining Ottoman Empire. In 1878 representatives of Great Powers attempted to settle the crisis through a compromise solution embodied by the Treaty of Berlin. But soon it became obvious that the arrangement imposed on the Balkans by the Congress of Berlin was not the right path to permanent peace in the region. The main reason for this was the growing self-confidence of a new national state in the Balkans, the Principality of Bulgaria, that had stareted to emancipate itself from its dependency on Russia. One part of this new, active policy of Sophia was a tendency to get free from the constraints of the Treaty of Berlin that hindered national unification of the Bulgarians. This tendency culminated in the coup d´état in Plovdiv, 1885, and the unification of the Principality of Bulgaria and Eastern Rumelia. This obvious breach of the Treaty of Berlin immediately ended the short-lived peace in the Balkans and consequently led to a crisis of relations between the European Great Powers. The harshest rejection of the coup d´état of Plovdiv came from the neighbouring Kingdom of Serbia. Relations between Belgrade and Sophia were tense from the time the Principality of Bulgaria came into being, as it did also include some territories claimed by Serbia. The disputes between both countries led to a diplomatic crisis of 1884 followed by the Serbo-Bulgarian war one year later. Czech society of that time was going through a period of disputes between the Old Czechs, who were the main political force, and the ever more self-confident opposition party, the Young Czechs. The developments in the Balkans were attentively followed. Throughout the entire crisis, Czech press dedicated its front pages to news and comments on what was going on in South-Eastern Europe. The developments in South-Eastern Europe were interpreted diversely, according to the political affiliation of the editors¬; the greatest difference was to be found between the Young Czech press and the Old Czech one. The Old Czech newspapers were analysing the role Austria-Hungary should play in the Balkans, whereas in the opinion of the Young Czech paper, Národní listy, the Great Powers in the Balkans were only impeding the natural development in the direction towards liberalization of the nations within the Ottoman Empire. According to Národní listy, the only Great Power able to influence South-Eastern Europe in a positive way was the Tsarist Russia, “patron of the southern Slavs”. Generally speaking, Czech press didn’t perceive the Serbo-Bulgarian dispute as an internal conflict in the Balkans, but as a result of the Great Powers´ struggle for influence in the area.
