French Prepositions SUR and SOUS and their possible Czech Equivalents (A Contrastive Study of Parallel Literary Texts)

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with French prepositions SUR and SOUS and their usage in a text. It aims to determine what are the possible Czech equivalents of these two prepositions and the intention is to confirm or disprove the hypothesis that the most logical translations of SUR and SOUS are the Czech word na (on) and pod (under). In order to find the most used equivalents, an analysis of two parallel literary texts was carried out. The two texts are the work Madame Bovary by the author Gustave Flaubert and its Czech translation by the translator Eva Musilová. In its first part, the bachelor thesis discusses the different uses of the prepositions SUR and SOUS, and in its second part it focuses on the possible Czech equivalents of these two prepositions. The results show that the initial hypothesis was correct and that is that the most common equivalents of the French prepositions SUR and SOUS are in fact the Czech prepositions na and pod.

Ce mémoire de licence parle des prépositions françaises SUR et SOUS et ses emplois dans un texte. Il a pour but de déterminer quels sont des équivalents tch?ques possibles de ces deux prépositions et il vise ? confirmer ou infirmer l'hypoth?se que les traductions les plus logiques de SUR et SOUS sont les termes tch?ques na et pod. Afin de trouver les équivalents les plus utilisés, une analyse des deux textes littéraires parall?les a été effectuée. Il s'agit de l'?uvre Madame Bovary écrite par Gustave Flaubert et sa traduction tch?que par la traductrice Eva Musilová. Le mémoire de licence traite dans sa premi?re partie des différents emplois des prépositions SUR et SOUS et dans sa deuxi?me partie, il se consacre sur des différents équivalents tch?ques possibles de ces deux prépositions. Les résultats montrent que l'hypoth?se initiale était correcte et que les équivalents les plus courants des prépositions françaises SUR et SOUS sont les prépositions tch?ques na et pod.
