Characterization od the garnet-group minerals by Raman spectroscopy

Abstract:

Cílem bakalářské práce je prozkoumání minerálů skupiny granátu pomocí Ramanovy spektrometrie. Zkoumány byly běžné granáty ugranditové a pyralspitové skupiny. Bylo nutné použít dva laboratorní přístroje na získání kompletní analýzy vybraných vzorků a to elektronovou mikrosondu a Ramanův spektroskop. Dále se pracovalo v programu Peakfit, kde byla modelována spektra granátů, pro zjištění přesných pozic vrcholů. Na Ramanovém spektroskopu byl proveden výzkum za pomocí dvou laserů 532nm a 633nm, jelikož každý z použitých laserů pokrývá jen část potřebného rozsahu. Laser 532nm nebyl vhodný pro všechny typy granátů. Zejména proo pyrop a grossular, kde byla naměřena luminiscence, také laser 633nm není určen ke zkoumání všech minerálů ze skupiny granátů. Na laseru 633nm je absolutně nevhodné měřit grossular, jelikož je přes celé Ramanovo spektrum pouze luminiscence. Méně vhodný je pro goldmanit, zde se luminiscenční jev objevuje také. Vzorky, které byly analyzovány byly homogení, až na andradit, který byl heterogenní. Andradit byl ve středu zrna 100 % homogenní, ale na okraji byla výrazná grossulárová komponenta. Na základě ramanových spekter bylo zjištěno, že almandin nelze rozeznat od spessartinu. Ostatní minerály lze odlišit pomocí Ramanovy spektrokopie.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis was an examination of minerals of the garnet group using Raman spectrometry. Common granites of ugrandite and pyralspite groups were studied. It was necessary to use an electron microscope and Raman spectroscopy to obtain a complete analysis of the chosen samples. Furthermore, a Peakfit program was used for modeling the garnet spectra for determining an exact position of the peaks. Two lasers were used on the Raman spectroscope, 532 nm and 633 nm, as each of the lasers used covers merely a section of the range required. 532 nm laser was not suitable for all of the garnets, namely for pyrope and grossular, where a luminescence was measured. Also, a use of 633 nm laser is inappropriate for measuring grossular, as a luminescence takes over the whole Raman spectrum. Luminescence also appears while studying goldmanit. Samples that were analyzed were homogeneous, except for andradite, which is heterogeneous. Andradite was 100% homogeneous in the middle of the grain, but a substantial grossular component was found at the edge. Based on the Raman spectra, it was determined that almandine cannot be distinguished from spessartine. Other samples can be distinguished by using Raman spectroscopy.
