The sound and the city: soundwalking as the way of mapping the public space

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zaměřuje na auditivní projekty, které v posledních šesti letech vznikají v evropských velkoměstech a tvoří jejich zvukové mapy nebo zvukové procházky po nich. Na hranici žurnalistiky, publicistiky a uměleckých tvarů, na hranici featuru, sound artu a autorské hudby vyznačí diplomová práce žánr těchto projektů. Prozkoumá, zda je jejich zkoumání mimo kontext GPS technologie a mobilních aplikací relevantní, zda jsou přenositelné do prostředí tradičního rozhlasového média a jakou roli v jejich percepci zaujímá posluchač. Diplomová práce předloží strukturalistickou analýzu jednoho projektu z Bělehradu (inspirovaná přístupem strukturální estetiky), pro doplnění kontextu také deskripci projektů z Londýna a Prahy. Popisem kompozičních pravidel, formy a technologie diplomová práce prozkoumá fenomén soundwalkingu z hlediska rozhlasovosti a používání rozhlasových prostředků.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis is focusing on auditive projects emerging in European cities in the last six years which are creating their sound maps and sound walks. On the border of journalism and art forms, on the border of feature, sound art and author music, the thesis will mark the genre of these projects. The thesis will find out if it is relevant to explore them outside the context of GPS technology and mobile applications, if they are transferable to the traditional radio medium and what is the role of listener in their perception. The diploma thesis will put forward a structuralist analysis of a single project from Belgrade (inspired by the structural aesthetics approach) and to augment the context also a description of projects from London and Prague. By describing the composition rules, form and technology, the thesis will explore the soundwalking phenomenon regarding the nature of radio and use of radio means.
