Environmental attitudes and behavior of university students

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá environmentálními postoji a chováním studentů vysokých škol. Cílem výzkumné části této práce bylo prozkoumat úroveň environmentálních postojů a chování českých vysokoškolských studentů, zjistit, jaký je mezi těmito postoji a chováním vztah a které faktory s nimi souvisí. Environmentální postoje byly měřeny pomocí stručné verze dotazníku Environmental Attitudes Inventory (EAI-24) a ke zjišťování environmentálního chování byl využit dotazník General Ecological Behavior Scale (GEB-50). Výsledky výzkumu ukázaly, že postoje českých vysokoškolských studentů jsou proenvironmentální. Ohledně chování bylo zjištěno, že se studenti nejčastěji zapojují do aktivit týkajících se recyklace a nejméně často do aktivit z oblasti společenské angažovanosti. Mezi environmentálními postoji a chováním studentů byla zjištěna silná korelace. V tomto výzkumu byl také zjištěn statisticky významný rozdíl v environmentálních postojích a chování studentů v souvislosti s jejich pohlavím a typem oboru, který studují. Mezi studenty dvou různých studijních programů (stupňů studia) byl zjištěn rozdíl pouze v úrovni jejich environmentálního chování. Míra vedení studentů k proenvironmentálnímu chování v jejich dětství a dospívání a míra setkávání se s ekologickými tématy v rámci vysokoškolského studia měly s environmentálními postoji a chováním pouze velmi slabou souvislost.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis focuses on the environmental attitudes and behaviour of university students. The aim of the research part of this thesis was to investigate the level of environmental attitudes and behaviour of Czech university students, to find out what is the relationship between these attitudes and behaviour and which factors are related to them. Environmental attitudes were measured using a brief version of the Environmental Attitudes Inventory (EAI-24) and the General Ecological Behaviour Scale (GEB-50) was used to measure environmental behaviour. The results of the research showed that the attitudes of Czech university students are pro-environmental. Regarding behaviour, it was found that students most often engage in recycling activities and least often in social engagement activities. A strong correlation was found between environmental attitudes and environmental behaviour of students. This research also found a statistically significant difference in students' environmental attitudes and behaviour in relation to their gender and the type of field of study. Only a difference in the level of their environmental behaviour was found between students of two different educational grades. The extent to which students were encouraged to engage in pro-environmental behaviour in childhood and adolescence and the extent to which they encountered environmental issues in their university studies were only weakly related to environmental attitudes and behaviour.
