Trends in surface air temperature in the northern part of the Antarctic Peninsula and South Shetland Islands during 1950-2003

Abstract:

Disertační práci se zabývá časoprostorovou analýzou trendů průměrných ročních, sezónních i měsíčních přízemních teplot vzduchu naměřených na osmi stanicích nacházejících se v severní části Antarktického poloostrova a souostroví Jižní Shetlandy v období 1971-2000. Na některých stanicích jsem dle dostupnosti dat trendy analyzovala i za období delší, až 1950-2003. Stanice byly rozděleny do tří oblastí dle jejich geografické polohy v zájmovém území. Analýzy časových řad průměrných měsíčních teplot vzduchu a z nich odvozených řad sezónních a ročních teplotních průměrů a jejich teplotních trendů potvrdily oprávněnost tohoto geografického vymezení. V oblasti „jih“ se nacházejí stanice Vernadsky, Rothera, v oblasti „východ“ stanice Esperanza, Marambio a v oblasti „sever“ stanice Bellingshausen, Cap. A. Prat, Prez. E. Frei, Gen. B. O‘Higgins. Severní pobřeží Antarktického poloostrova vykazuje teplotní charakteristiky více podobné charakteristikám v souostroví Jižní Shetlandy, než na blízkém východním pobřeží Antarktického poloostrova. Pro východní pobřeží jsou typické z celé zájmové oblasti nejnižší roční průměrné teploty vzduchu s relativně vysokou směrodatnou odchylkou. Teploty vzduchu v oblasti „sever“ vykazují naopak nejvyšší teplotní průměry a nejnižší variabilitu. Analýzy potvrdily vzestupný trend ročních teplot vzduchu na všech stanicích a střídání teplejších a chladnějších období. Teplotní trendy stoupaly nejvýrazněji v zimě (na pěti stanicích) či. na podzim (na třech stanicích). Nejmenší míra oteplení či dokonce mírné ochlazení byly zaznamenány na jaře, na některých stanicích v létě. Hodnoty teplotních trendů byly nejnižší v souostroví Jižní Shetlandy. Na severu Antarktického poloostrova se v hodnotách teplotních trendů a v jejich ročním chodu projevují rozdíly mezi východním a západním pobřežím. Nejvýraznější oteplení bylo zaznamenáno v období 1971-2000 v průběhu podzimu na východním pobřeží poloostrova. V období delším jsou nejvýznamnější trendy v oblasti „jih“. Dvacetileté teplotní trendy vykazují za období 1950-2003 kolísavý průběh, výrazně rozkolísaný v oblasti „jih“, relativně vyrovnaný v oblasti „sever“. Vzestupné trendy průměrné teploty vzduchu zřejmě souvisí se změnami atmosférické cirkulace, s rozsahem mořského zalednění a s oceánskou cirkulací. Trendy přízemní teploty vzduchu jsou přitom v severní části Antarktického poloostrova a v souostroví Jižní Shetlandy výrazně vzestupnější než kdekoli jinde v Antarktidě.

Abstract:

The following work deals with the spatiotemporal analysis of annual, seasonal and monthly surface air temperature trends mesured at eight stations upon the northern Antarctic Peninsula and South Shetland Islands for the period 1971-2000. Longer time series were analyzed at some of the stations (maximum period was 1950-2003). The stations were divided according to their geographical location into three distinct regions. The analysis of monthly air temperatures and deduced seasonal and annual air temperature time series and their trends confirmed this geographical demarcation: southern region (Vernadsky, Rothera), eastern region (Esperanza, Marambio), and northern region (Bellingshausen, Cap. A. Prat, Prez. E. Frei, Gen. B. O’Higgins). The northern coast of the Antarctic Peninsula shows temperature characteristics resembling more to those at South Shetland Islands then those at closed eastern coast. The eastern coast of Antarctic Peninsula is characterised by the lowest mean annual air temperature with relatively high standard deviation. The surface air temperature in the northern region shows the highest mean air temperature and the smallest changes in surface air temperature. The analysis confirmed warming trend in surface air temperature at all of studied stations and alternation of warmer and colder periods. The most pronounced increasing seasonal surface air temperature trend was found out in winter (at five stations), followed by autumn (at three stations). The least increasing or even decreasing air temperature trends were recorded in spring or in summer. The values of air temperture trends were lowest at the South Shetland Islands. Different trends in surface air temperature and their annual regime were obtained for the eastern and western coasts of the Northern Antarctic Peninsula. The greatest warming trends during the period 1971-2000 were recorded on the eastern coast in autumn season. During longer period the most important air temperature trend was identified in „southern“ region. „Northern“ region was characterised by the lowest air temperature trend. The twentyyears air temperature trends fluctuated in the period 1950-2003, at most in „southern“ region and relatively at least in „northern“ region. This observed warming trend is related to changes in atmospheric circulation, the extent of sea ice and ocean processes. Surface air temperature variability and warming trends are of higher importance in the region of the northern Antarctic Peninsula and South Shetland Islands than in other Antarctic region.
