The dispute over the Kuril Islands (Russia's stance)

Abstract:

Problémem jižních Kuril je teritoriální spor mezi Ruskem a Japonskem, který Japonsko považuje za nevyrovnaný od konce druhé světové války. Po válce byly všechny Kurilské ostrovy pod správní kontrolou SSSR, nyní Ruska, vlastnictví řady jižních ostrovů (Iturup, Kunašir a ostrovy malého kurilského hřebene) je však Japonskem zpochybněno. Problém Kurilských ostrovů je hlavní překážkou úplného vyrovnání rusko-japonských vztahů a uzavření mírové smlouvy. Tato práce se snaží odpovědět na to, jaký postoj k řešení daného problému má Rusko a jaké jsou scénáře řešení z ruského pohledu, a na základě toho identifikovat překážky v nalezení vhodného řešení.

Abstract:

The problem of the South Kuril territories is the territorial dispute between Russia and Japan, which Japan considers to be unsettled since the end of the Second World War. After the war, all Kuril Islands have been under control of the USSR, now Russia, but the ownership of the number of southern islands (Iturup, Kunashir and the islands of a small Kuril ridge) is being questioned by Japan.The problem of the Kuril Islands is the main obstacle to a complete settlement of Russian-Japanese relations and the conclusion of the peace treaty. This bachelor thesis tries to answer what the Russian attitude towards the problem is and what the scenarios of its potential solution are. Afterwards, on these grounds, the obstacles to finding the appropriate solution will be identified.
