The Conception of Mind and Meaning in the Phenomenology of Religion and Cognitive Science of Religion

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá konceptuálním a filosofickým pozadím kognitivních a fenomenologických přístupů v religionistice. Jako hlavní problém skrytý za obtížemi těchto přístupů a jejich případného propojování v rámci novějších kognitivních přístupů, identifikuje vztah mysli a těla, respektive otázku mentální kauzace. Pokouší se ukázat, jak se konceptuální obtíže identifikované v rámci filosofie mysli promítají do religionistických teorií a metod. Zároveň argumentuje pro úzkou souvislost mezi zastávanou teorií mysli a preferovaným pojetím významu a ukazuje, jak epifenomenalismus ve vztahu k vědomí vede k eliminaci role významů při vysvětlování lidského chování.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the conceptual and philosophical background of cognitive and phenomenological approaches in religious studies. It identifies the mind-body relationship, or more precisely the issue of mental causationas the main problem behind the difficulties of these approaches and their possible combination in the context of contemporary cognitive approaches. It attempts to show how the conceptual difficulties identified within the philosophy of mind are reflected in theories and methods of religious studies. It also argues for a close link between the theory of mind and the preferred concept of meaning and shows how the epiphenomenalism in relation to consciousness eliminates the role of the meaning in explanations of human behaviour.
