Development of the social status of midwife

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá vývojem sociálního statusu porodní asistentky se zaměřením na stav na přelomu 20. a 21. století. V teoretické části jsou rozebrány pojmy porodní asistentka, sociální status a prestiž. Je zde popsán historický vývoj profese porodní asistentky, zejména klíčové okamžiky, které vedly ke změně sociálního statusu. Dále je zde uvedena současná legislativa vztahující se k práci porodní asistentky, jelikož kompetence a umožnění jejich výkonu se výrazně podílí na formování sociálního statusu a prestiže povolání. Na závěr teoretické části jsou uvedeny profesní organizace porodních asistentek, které se ve své podstatě podílí na zvyšování sociálního statusu. Praktickou část práce tvoří analýza dotazníkového šetření, kterého se zúčastnilo 176 respondentů, a tří polostrukturovaných rozhovorů, jejichž cílem bylo zjištění informovanosti a postoj mužů a žen k práci porodní asistentky. Otázky na informovanost zjišťovaly, zdali respondenti vědí, kdo je porodní asistentka a kdo dula, jaké je vzdělání porodní asistentky, znají-li kompetence porodní asistentky a duly. Počet zcela správných odpovědí nebyl velký, ale v klíčových bodech byli respondenti vcelku dobře informováni. Druhý typ otázek zjišťoval, jestli respondentům byla porodní asistentka v něčem přínosná, jak vnímají práci porodní asistentky a jak hodnotí prestiž tohoto povolání, a to i ve vztahu k jiným zdravotnickým povoláním. Vnímání i přínos práce porodní asistentky byl hodnocen spíše kladně, prestiž hodnotili jako mírně nadprůměrnou.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the development of the social status of the midwife, in particular focusing on the period of the end of 20th and the beginning of the 21st century. In the theoretical part, the terms midwife, social status and prestige are explained, as well as the historic development of the profession of the midwife, particularly the key milestones which marked changes in the social status. Furthermore, legislation related to the profession of midwife is presented in this part, because the competences of midwife and significantly affect the social status and the prestige of the profession. The last section of the theoretical part provides an overview of professional organisations associating midwives which, by their very nature, help to increase the social status. The practical part of the thesis comprises of a survey analysing responses of 176 respondents, and three semi-structured interviews which aimed at analysing of the level of public awareness regarding the midwife and the attitude towards the profession. The questions regarding the awareness aimed at finding out whether the respondents know who the midwife is and how she differs from the doula, as well as questions concerning the education and competences of the midwife and the doula. The number of surveys with all the right answers was not very large but respondents showed fairly good knowledge regarding the key points. The second type of survey was focused on finding out whether a midwife helped the respondents in any way (if relevant), how the respondents perceived the profession of midwife and its prestige, especially in contrast to other medical professions. Respondents’ perception of the profession and its work was rather positive, the prestige was evaluated as slightly above average.
