Features of extrinsic modality in coursebooks at intermediate level

Abstract:

Modalita je vnímána jako velice obtížná jazyková oblast pro většinu studentů anglického jazyka. Hlavním problémem není její forma, ale význam. Je to způsobeno především složitostí konceptu modality, jenž závisí na dané osobě a na individuálním vnímání události, které rozhoduje o použití tohoto či jiného modálního slovesa. Proto je velmi náročné a prakticky nemožné osvojit si používání modality na úrovni rodilého mluvčí. Zároveň je pro učitele a tvůrce učebnic obtížné tuto problematiku správně prezentovat. Musí mít na paměti lingvistické pozadí studentů a jejich specifika, aby studentům co nejvíce usnadnili proces učení. Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá jistotní modalitou, konkrétněji možnými rozdíly mezi ‘will’ a ‘must’, ‘can’ a ‘may’, a aplikuje tyto rozdíly na středně pokročilé úrovni. Pozornost je věnována možným obtížím, s nimiž se mohou příslušní studenti setkávat ať už v oblasti formy či významu modalit. Dále tato bakalářská práce porovnává pět běžně používaných učebnic na středně pokročilé úrovni se zaměřením na jistotní modalitu a důkladně se zaměřuje na rozdíly mezi těmito čtyřmi modály; ‘will’ a ‘must’, ‘can’ a ‘may’. Zkoumá, která z učebnic se zabývá těmito obtížemi a zda a jak pomáhá žákům pochopit význam a rozdíly jednotlivých modalit. Závěrem byly sestaveny dvě devadesátiminutové vyučovací hodiny zaměřující se na tyto čtyři modály; ‘will’ a ‘must’, ‘can’ a ‘may’. Účelem těchto vyučovacích hodin bylo zjištení schopností studentů rozlišovat mezi danými rozdíly a jak pohotově a sebevědomě dokáží tyto modály následně používat. První hodina pojednávala o rozdílech mezi modály ‘will’ a ‘must’. Jelikož studenti běžně užívají modální sloveso ‘must’ spíše ve smyslu dispoziční modality, mohou mít tedy potíže s jeho jistotním užitím a následným rozlišením mezi ‘will’, které je prezentováno především jako ‘budoucí čas’. Druhá hodina byla věnována rozdílu mezi modály ‘can’ a ‘may’. Byla vybrána tato dvě slovesa, protože zejména čeští studenti mají sklony k nadužívání modálu ‘can’ za účelem vyjádření možnosti a modál ‘may’ vnímají spíše jako prostředek žádosti o povolení, tedy omezují se na jeho dispoziční užití a mohou mít tedy potíže s jeho jistotním určením a aplikováním.

Abstract:

Modality is a notoriously difficult language area for most learners of English to master. The main issue is not in terms of form, but in terms of meaning. This is caused by the complexity of the concept, and due to the fact that it is usually a matter of a person’s choice whether they use either this or that modal verb according to their perception of an event. Therefore the acquisition of a near-native usage of modality is almost impossible. Concomitantly, it is a difficult area for teachers to teach and material planners to approach. They have to bear in mind the linguistic background of learners and its specifics in order to support the learning process as much as possible. With this in mind the present dissertation looks at extrinsic modality in full modals, synthesizing the critical commentary. It then focuses more specifically on the subtle differences in extrinsic meaning between must and will and can and may with a view to highlighting these differences at the intermediate level. The dissertation then compares the presentations of extrinsic modality across five widely used coursebooks at the intermediate level, again with an emphasis on will vs must and may vs can and with a view to deciding which one most closely addresses these difficulties and whether and how it helps learners to recognise the differences in meaning. Finally, I constructed two ninety-minute lessons focusing on will vs must and can vs may to determine whether students at this level can distinguish between the meanings involved and how comfortable and confident they would feel about their use. First, I chose to focus on differences between will and must because learners are familiar with the intrinsic usage of must and could therefore have difficulty to use it extrinsically and feel the difference between will and must, all the more so as they are often taught that will is the 'future simple'. The second lesson dealt with the distinction between can and may. I chose these two modal verbs because especially Czech learners wrongly overuse can for possibility and would benefit from closer attention to the difference in meaning.
