Evaluation of buckwheat seed vigor by analysis of residual chlorophyll in seeds

Abstract:

The history of agriculture begin during Neolithic era which happened around 9000 to 10,000years ago. And buckwheat is one of the oldest cultivated crops throughout the globe. It hasremained minor neglected crops until recent decade, research and studies focused onimprovement and development of cultivars. Its demand has increased over last decade due toits nutritional value, short life-cycle and hardiness.The main aim of this thesis is to evaluate the buckwheat vigor by analyzing the residualchlorophyll content in the seed. We conduct chlorophyll content test in six variety of buckwheatusing the equipment called mobile chlorophyll analyzer and observed the seed germination ofdifferent chlorophyll content in same and two different temperature in seed germinationchamber.Another aim of this thesis is to explain the buckwheat seed vigor by performing standardgermination test under different combined conditions like two different temperature with twodifferent water content. This test is carried out with twelve buckwheat variety in seedgermination chamber and correlate its value with germination test value of residual chlorophyllcontent seeds.We found that seed with low chlorophyll content have high germinate rate and speed,cotyledons count and better seedling stand than that of seed with high chlorophyll wheregermination is less and speed is low with many anomalies. We found in another test thatgermination speed is significantly affected by temperature. Higher temperature(20C) of our testis prove to have greater germinate of seed in short period of time than low temperature (15C).And we also observed that germination rate depends on seed breeds, some breed of seedperform well in all of the test where some of them perform bad in all tests. Additional we didn’tfound any significant influence by different volume of water on seed vigor testing.
