The Concept of the Emancipation of Woman as seen through T. Fontane's and O. Schubin's late 19th Century Prose Works

Abstract:

This work deals with two German novelists from the 19th century, the century of realism. The fist, Theodor Fontane, born in Neuruppin in December 30th, 1819, was descended from French Hugenot settlers in Brandenburg, and was brough up on the Baltic Sea coast of Prussia before spending most of his life in Berlin. He trained as pharmacist - apotheccary, his fahters profession, but in 1849 decided to earn his living as a writer. He spent several years as a foreign correspondent in London and his profilic nonfiction out-put includes journalism, poetry, local travelougues of Berlins hinterland, unpartisan accounts of Bismarck's wars and two autobiographical works. He published his first novel, Before the Storm (1878), at the age of 57 and this was followed by sixteen further noveles which established his reputation in the twenthieth century as Germanys finest novelist. After he wrote Effi Briest, he found his very own tone, yielding insights into the lives of the nobility as well as the "common man". His achievement there was later described as poetic realism poetischer Realismus. Theodor Fontanes sensitive portrayals of womens lives in the late nineteenth century society are unsurpassed in European literature. He wrote The Woman taken in Adultery (1882), Cécile (1886), Delusion, Confusions (1888), Jenny Treibel (1892), and Effi Briest (1895) focus on problems of love and marriage, while the late work The Stechlin (1898) provide humorous family portraits od the Prussian society in decline. He died in September 20, 1898. The next novelist is Alosia Kirschner (pseudonym Ossip Schubin). She was born in Prague on June 10th 1854. Ossip Schubin published ower 40 novels and romance novels. She lived in Berlin, Prague, Rom and Paris. This towns inspirated her works. She wrote: Die Geschichte eines genies (1884), Asbein (1888), Vollmondzauber (1899), Im gewohnten Geleis (1901), Erlachhof (1887), Flucht nach Amerika (1914). Ossip Shubin died in 1934 near Prague, in Košátky.

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá prozaickou tvorbou dvou autor realismu 19. století, Theodora Fontana, pedevším díly Effi Briest, LAdultera a Mathilde Möhring. Druhým autorem, jeho vrtevníkem, byla autorka Aloisia Kirschner, známá pod pseudonymem Ossip Schubin. Prostednictvím rozboru a interpretace jednotlivých dl, Vollmondzauber, Im gewohnten Geleis, Asbein a Die Geschichte eines Genies, byl vytvoen analytický základ této diplomové práce. ást diplomové práce se vnuje vystižení pojmu Gesellschaftsroman a Unterhaltungsroman, dále pak charakteru typické fontanovské ženy. Práce neopomíjí ani dobové a spoleenské aspekty tehdejší spolenosti, hlavn kritiku vilémovského Nmecka a kritiku postavení ženy ve spolenosti. To se dotýká též problematiky píících autorek tohoto období. Tato diplomová práce mže tenái pehlednji piblížit problematiku ženské otázky na konci 19.století a podat vrohodný obraz soudobého Nmecka.
