The EU as a normative power and an actor of democracy promotion in its Eastern Neighborhood? Case study of Armenia

Abstract:

Diploma's thesis deals with the role of the European Union as a normative power and actor in support of democratization in its Eastern neighbourhood, on the case of Armenia and with use of methods of content analysis and process tracing. In the first part of the thesis is the aim to find out, whether prevailed in the contractual relationship between the EU and Armenia rather normative pressure or the principle of conditionality and how did it change in time. The aim of the second part, on the case of presidential elections in Armenia in 2008 and situation which happened after them, is to find out, whether there was normative impact of the EU in Armenia on the ground and on the present case and also whether the EU was active in the reference case by normative pressure, or the principle of conditionality, and how concrete.

Abstract:

Diplomová práca sa zaoberá pôsobením Európskej únie ako normatívnej mocnosti a aktéra podpory demokratizácie vo východnom susedstve a to na prípade Arménska s pomocou využitia metód obsahovej analýzy a process tracingu. V prvej časti práce je cieľom zistiť, či doposiaľ prevládal v zmluvnom vzťahu EÚ a Arménska skôr normatívny tlak alebo princíp kondicionality a ako sa premieňalo pôsobenie týchto dvoch princípov v čase. V druhej časti je na prípade prezidentských volieb v Arménsku v roku 2008 a situácií, ktorá po nich nastala cieľom zistiť, či bol prítomný normatívny vplyvu zo strany EÚ v Arménsku priamo v praxi a na uvedenom prípade a zároveň či EÚ pôsobila v sledovanom prípade prostredníctvom normatívneho tlaku, alebo princípu kondicionality, a ako konkrétne.
