This thesis deals with the genre of contemporary (neo-)slave narratives, also called liberating narratives. It analyzes two novels by contemporary African American women writers - Dessa Rose by Sherley Anne Williams and Beloved by Toni Morrison - to establish what these works have brought to the genre and how they portray slavery.
