The effect of extreme temperatures during embryogenesis on the life history of amphibians

Abstract:

Současná klimatická změna se neprojevuje pouze zvýšenými průměrnými teplotami, ale i zvýšenou frekvencí extrémních teplotních událostí, jako jsou vlny veder. Obzvláště extrémní teploty těchto událostí bývají u ektotermních živočichů často letální, což má přímý vliv na jejich přežívání a populační dynamiku. Většina studií se soustředila na vliv extrémních teplot na konkrétní vývojové stádium. Jak se tento vliv přenáší do pozdějších vývojových stádií u druhů s nepřímým vývojem je nedostatečně prozkoumáno. Teoretická část této práce se zabývá klimatickou změnou a jejím vlivem na znaky ektotermních organismů a jejich teplotní adaptace. Praktická část se zabývá vlivem teplotních extrémů během embryogeneze na fenotyp embryí, larev a mláďat čolka horského (Ichthyosaura alpestris) s použitím experimentu za laboratorních a polopřírodních podmínek. Výsledky ukázaly, že extrémní teploty zkracují délku embryonálního vývoje a zvětšují velikost larev po vylíhnutí, ale nemají vliv na přežívání. V larválním stádiu bylo pozorováno významné snížení přežívání u larev vystavených opakovaným teplotním extrémům a zkrácení doby vývoje u skupin, které prošly jedním teplotním extrémem během embryogeneze. Extrémní teploty neměly přímý vliv na rychlost růstu, rychlost klidového metabolismu a explorační aktivitu mláďat. Tyto výsledky naznačují, že k pochopení vlivu teplotních extrémů na populační dynamiku je zapotřebí soustředit pozornost na nejzranitelnější stádia, vystavit je ekologicky realistickému vlivu extrémních teplot a sledovat přenos tohoto vlivu do pozdějších vývojových stádií. Tento přístup může významně přispět ke zpřesnění předpovědí o dopadech klimatické změny na populační dynamiku nejenom obojživelníků, ale i dalších ektotermních živočichů s nepřímým vývojem.

Abstract:

The ongoing climate change is not only manifesting itself in increased mean temperatures but also in the increased frequency of extreme temperature events such as heat waves. The extreme temperatures are often lethal for ectothermic taxa, which has a direct impact on their survival and population dynamics. Most studies have focused on the effect of extreme temperatures on ectotherms at a specific developmental stage. How this effect translates to later developmental stages in species with indirect development is poorly understood. The theoretical part of this thesis deals with climate change and its influence on ectothermic organisms and their temperature adaptations. The practical part deals with the influence of temperature extremes during embryogenesis on the phenotype of embryos, larvae, and juveniles of the Alpine newt (Ichthyosaura alpestris) using experiments under laboratory and semi-natural conditions. The results showed that extreme temperatures shortened the length of embryonic development and increased hatchling size but do not affect survival. In the larval stage, a significant reduction in survival was observed in larvae exposed to repeated temperature extremes and a shortened development time in groups that underwent one temperature extreme during embryogenesis. Extreme temperatures did not have a direct effect on growth rate, resting metabolic rate, and exploratory activity of juveniles. These results suggest that to understand the impact of temperature extremes on population dynamics, it is necessary to focus attention on the most vulnerable stages, expose them to the ecologically realistic influence of extreme temperatures, and monitor the transfer of this influence to later developmental stages. This approach can significantly contribute to the refinement of predictions about the impacts of climate change on population dynamics not only of amphibians but also of other ectotherms with indirect development.
