The Impact of International Trade and Investment on the Socio-economic Development in Ghana

Abstract:

ABSTRAKT Ekonomický růst je cílem mnoha zemí po celém světě s vidinou zlepšení životní úrovně a ekonomických podmínek populace. Přímé zahraniční investice zažnamenaly progresivní expanzi spolu s dramatickým ekonomickým růstem, který způsobil, že se Ghana stala jedním z prioritních cílů zahraničních investorů nejen v Africe, ale celosvětově. Tato studie zkoumala dopad přímých zahraničních investic (FDI) na socioekonomický vývoj v Ghaně. Studie se dále zabývala vztahem mezi vybranými proměnnými. V empirické části byly využity Johansenův test pro kointegraci a ARDL regresní model ke zkoumání dlouhodobých a krátkodobých vztahů spojených s proměnnými. Studie Pracuje s daty posledních 30 let (1990 - 2020), která byla získána především ze Světové datové banky. Studie se zabývala třemi ukazateli, na které mají vliv přímé zahraniční investice, nezaměstnanost, HDP/ obyvatele a očekávanou délku života. Pro všechny proměnné byl vykreslen graf časové osy, se zaměřením na trend pro každou proměnnou na základě příslušných let. Výsledky z modelu ARDL ukázaly, že vliv na HDP na obyvatele byl statisticky významný s 5% hladinou významnosti. Nezaměstnanost byla shledána jako statisticky nevýznamná. Ukázalo se však, že vliv na průměrnáou délkua života je dlouhodobě významný s 5% hladinou významnosti. Výsledky z korelační matice ukázaly, že existuje silnější korelace mezi FDI a HDP/ obyvatele stejně jako FDI a očekávanou délkou života. Korelace mezi FDI a nezaměstnaností vykazuje slabou korelaci (s koeficientem menším než 0,50).

Abstract:

ABSTRACT Economic growth is a goal for many countries around the world with the expectation of improving living standards and economic conditions of the people. Ghana’s Foreign Direct investment has experienced progressive expansion together with its dramatic economic growth which has made the country a top target to the African market and the world at large. This study examined the impact of FDI on the socio-economic development in Ghana. The study further examined the causal relationship among the chosen variables. The empirical methodology used the Johansen test for cointegration and ARDL regression model to examine the long run and short run relationships involved with the variables. The study used the time series data of 30 years (1990 – 2020) for the analysis and was obtained mainly from the World Data Bank. The study considered the major indicators that FDI has an impact on such as unemployment, GDP Per capita and life expectancy. Time series graph was plotted for all the variables, and we looked at the trend for each variable based on their respective years. The results from ARDL model showed that GDP Per capita was statistically significant with 5% level of significance. Unemployment was found to be statistically insignificant. However, life expectancy was shown to have a significant impact in the long run at 5% level of significance. The results from the correlation matrix showed there is a stronger correlation between FDI and GDPPc as well as FDI and Life Expectancy. The correlation between FDI and unemployment shows a weak correlation (with coefficient less than 0.50).
