Analysis of air temperature at selected stations in Svalbard archipelago

Abstract:

The aim of the thesis was to analyze the air temperature at selected stations in the Svalbard Archipelago and evaluate its dependence on atmospheric and local factors in the period 2010–2019. Investigated temperature characteristics were based on hourly temperature observations from four meteorological stations; sea ice extent was evaluated from sea ice maps created from satellite-based data in winter seasons. Atmospheric circulation was evaluated using a calendar of circulation types and available reanalyzed geopotential height data. Reanalyzed data of upper wind components and near-surface wind directions from ground measurements were used to assess the wind direction. The air temperature analysis showed that, except for summer, the lowest average temperature occurred at the Petuniabukta station. In the summer months, the lowest average temperature was recorded in Hornsund, but this station showed the highest temperatures in other seasons. The evaluation of the factors affecting air temperature showed that the largest differences in air temperatures are related to atmospheric circulation. In contrast, the highest temperature variability for individual circulation types was evident in the winter period. The relationship between sea ice extent and air temperature was found in the different time of formation and disappearance of sea ice, connected with the different time of occurrence of negative or positive temperatures. The influence of topography on the air temperature was mainly found on days with the highest daily temperatures, which were probably affected by the orographic effect and the foehn wind occurence during the eastern advection.

Abstract:

Cieľom diplomovej práce bolo analyzovať teplotu vzduchu na vybraných staniciach súostrovia Svalbard a zhodnotiť jej závislosť na atmosférických a lokálnych faktoroch v období 2010–2019. Teplotné charakteristiky boli skúmané na základe hodinových teplotných hodnôt nameraných na štyroch staniciach, rozsah morského ľadu bol hodnotený z máp morského ľadu vytvorených zo satelitných snímkov v zimných obdobiach. Atmosférická cirkulácia bola hodnotená pomocou kalendára cirkulačných typov a dostupných reanalyzovaných údajov geopotenciálnej výšky. Pre potreby hodnotenia smeru vetra boli využité reanalyzované údaje zložiek výškového vetra a smery vetra z pozemných meraní. Z analýzy teploty vzduchu vyplynulo, že s výnimkou leta sa najnižšia priemerná teplota vyskytovala na stanici Petuniabukta. V letných mesiacoch bola najnižšia priemerná teplota zaznamenaná v Hornsunde, v ostatných ročných obdobiach však táto stanica vykazovala najvyššie teploty. Z hodnotenia faktorov ovplyvňujúcich teplotu vzduchu vyplynulo, že najväčšie rozdiely v teplotách súvisia s atmosférickou cirkuláciou, pričom najväčšia variabilita teplôt pri jednotlivých cirkulačných typoch bola patrná v zimnom období. Súvislosť plochy morského ľadu s teplotou vzduchu bola preukázaná pri rozdielnom čase tvorby a zániku morského zámrzu, súvisiacich s rozdielnym časom výskytu záporných či kladných teplôt. Vplyv topografie na teplotu vzduchu bol preukázaný v dňoch s najvyššími dennými teplotami, ktoré boli pravdepodobne spôsobené orografickým efektom a fénovým prúdením z východného smeru.
