With them, not about them: teenage heroines in contemporary cinema

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce analyzuje snímky Muréna (2021) a Aftersun (2022) prostřednictvím konceptu živoucího těla podle Iris Marion Young. Cílem práce je ukázat, jaké možnosti nám poskytuje koncept živoucího těla pro analýzu filmů i vlastní tvůrčí práci s dospívajícími hrdinkami. Práce obohacuje koncept živoucího těla podle Iris Marion Young o pojetí konceptu u Lucy Bolton ve vztahu k analýze filmového vyprávění. Dále práce tento koncept upřesňuje prostřednictvím pojetí subjektivity ve filmovém vyprávění a vývojové psychologie. Vzniká tak koncept živoucího těla, které se emancipuje, prostřednictvím kterého práce snímky analyzuje vymezením čtyř kategorií: prostoru, emancipace, vztahu s otcovskou figurou a vztahu se (staršími) dospívajícími. Praktická část bakalářské práce analyzuje snímky na základě vymezených kategorií v kontextu živoucího těla dospívajících protagonistek. Na základě poznatků z analýz jsou charakterizovány možnosti práce s konceptem živoucího těla a jeho přínosy. Práce shledává koncept živoucího těla vhodným pro filmové vyprávění z několika důvodů: akcentování subjektivního vnímání postav a možností jeho zprostředkování; soustředění se na vyprávění obrazem; vybízení k práci s komplexní charakteristikou postav a jejich ambivalencí bez potřeby vynášení soudů. Práce je primárně určena filmovým tvůrcům, kteří chtějí s dospívajícími protagonistkami pracovat ve svých filmech.

Abstract:

This bachelor’s thesis analyses the films Murina (2021) and Aftersun (2022) through the concept of the lived body by Iris Marion Young. The aim of this thesis is to show the possibilities of working with the lived body for film analysis as well as developing films with teenage protagonists. The thesis enriches the concept of the lived body by Iris Marion Young with the approach of Lucy Bolton in relation to film analysis. It then specifies the concept by defining subjectivity in film narration and through aspects of adolescence in developmental psychology. Thus, the concept of the lived body, which is emancipating is created and used to analyse the films through four categories: space, emancipation, relationship with a fatherly figure and relationship with (older) teenagers. The practical part of the thesis analyses the films based on the chosen categories in the context of the lived body of the teenage girl protagonists. The thesis concludes the possibilities of working with the concept of the lived body based on findings from the analysis. The concept of the lived body employed in this thesis seems apt for film narration for multiple reasons: its focus on subjectivity and different ways of delivering this subjectivity; for emphasis on visual storytelling; for developing complex yet ambivalent characters without the need to judge them for who they are. The thesis is meant for film professionals, who wish to work with teenage girl protagonists in their films.
