Abstract:

Práce se pokouší z lingvistického hlediska kriticky analyzovat oblast příslovcí a příslovečných určení tak jak jsou prezentovány v 7. a 8. kapitole učebnice gramatiky anglického jazyka pro studenty (SGEL) od autorů Greenbauma a Quirka. Práce dává tuto učebnici do kontrastu s díly jiných autorů a ukazuje cestu k lepšímu porozumění této oblasti anglické gramatiky. Hlavními výzkumnými metodami byly srovnávací analýza, deduktivní a induktivní náhled do této oblasti. Kapitola první předkládá úvod do problému. Kapitola druhá pojednává o nedostatcích a kontroverzních stanoviscích učebnice; součastně je pojednáno také o podobných problémech obsažených v podrobné gramatice anglického jazyka (CGEL) jakožte mateřské knihy jíž je SGEL zkrácenou verzí. Čtenář zde najde také poznámky týkající se některých rozdílů mezi oběma knihami. Kapitola třetí nabízí alternativní, optimalní přístup k problematice anglických příslovcí a příslovečných určení na pozadí SGEL a CGEL. Kapitola čtvrtá krátce popisuje tři různé koncepty od třech různých autorů a kapitola pátá je závěrem k celé práci. Materiál použitý při zpracování je formou seznamu umístěn na konci práce v podobě bibliografie.

Abstract:

This thesis tries to critically analyse from the linguistic point of view the area of adverbials and adverbial elements as they are presented in chapters 7 and 8 of SGEL. It puts the presentation in contrast with other works on English grammar, paves way towards better understanding of the issues and suggests more suitable approaches. The main research methods implemented are comparative analysis and deductive and inductive insight. Chapter one gives introduction to the subject of the bachelor thesis and provides a broader frame for it. Chapter two deals with shortcomings and controversies to be found in SGEL; it also makes use of the parent book to SGEL, A Comprehensive Grammar of the English Language (CGEL), the book of which SGEL is a shortened version; a reader of this thesis will also find in this chapter a number of notes on where SGEL falls short of CGEL and where, on the other hand, both books hold the same ground. Chapter three offers an alternative, optimal approach to presenting what is understood by traditional grammar as adverbials and adverbs in the English language against the backdrop of SGEL and CGEL. Chapter four shortly illustrates three different concepts by three different authors. Chapter five concludes the thesis with final thoughts. The research material used in support of the author's statements and conclusions is indicated on the list of Works cited, to be found at the end of this thesis.
