Alternative performance measures in the health care sector

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá problematikou alternativních měřítek výkonnosti (zkráceně APM neboli alternative performance measures) ve výročních zprávách veřejně obchodovaných účetních jednotek. Cílem práce je identifikovat, která APM jsou nejčastěji vykazována účetními jednotkami v rámci jejich výročních zpráv a na základě provedené analýzy zjistit, jaká je konzistentnost vykazovaných APM mezi jednotlivými účetními jednotkami a také posoudit transparentnost a pochopitelnost těchhle APM pro uživatele účetních informací. Analyzované účetní jednotky byly vybrány ze sektoru lékařské vybavení a služby indexu Stoxx 600 a na základě dat z výročních zpráv s koncem účetního období v roce 2020 bylo zjištěno, že nejčastějším APM v účetních závěrkách společností byl provozní zisk, který ovšem nemá jednotné pojmenování nebo kalkulaci. Mimo účetní závěrku se hojně vyskytoval ukazatel EBITDA a ukazatel čistý dluh. Účetní jednotky reportovaly upravený zisk na akcii o 35 % vyšší, než tomu bylo u klasického zisku na akci podle IFRS.

Abstract:

The diploma’s thesis deals with the alternative performance measures (abbreviated APM) in the annual reports of publicly traded companies. The aim of the diploma thesis is to identify which APM are most often reported by entities within their annual reports and based on the analysis to determine the consistency of reported APM between individual entities and also to assess the transparency and comprehensibility of these APM for users of accounting information. The analyzed entities were selected from the medical equipment and services sector of the Stoxx 600 index and based on data from annual reports with the end of the accounting period in 2020, it was found that the most common APM in the financial statements was operating profit, which does not have a uniform name or calculation. In the annual report besides financial statements, the EBITDA measure and the net debt measure were the most common. Entities reported adjusted earnings per share 35 % higher than conventional earnings per share under IFRS.
