Vegetation mapping using spectral indices

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá dostupností zdrojů družicových dat pro mapování vegetace s využitím spektrálních neboli vegetačních indexů a odvozených produktů. Byla vytvořena elektronická databáze s popisem dostupných dat (formát, prostorové vymezení, prostorové a časové rozlišení atd.). Pro vybrané plochy jsou vypočteny základní druhy vegetačních indexů (NDVI, TVI, SR, transformace Tasseled Cap) a jsou ověřovány způsoby, jakými lze v družicovém snímku oddělit plochy s vegetací a jak je dále klasifikovat. Pro vypočtené vegetační indexy bylo použito metody prahování histogramů hodnot. Jelikož vypočtené vegetační indexy spolu velmi těsně korelují (korelační koeficient je větší než 0,9), byly použity jako vstup analýzy hlavních komponent a na nově vzniklá pásma byla aplikována neřízená klasifikace metodou Isodata. Obě metody lze s jistými omezeními použít. Omezení vyplývají z prostorového rozlišení zpracovávaných dat, výskytu mixelů a odobného spektrálního chování jednotlivých druhů povrchů.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the accessibility of the satellite data sources applicable to the vegetation mapping using spectral or vegetation indices and derived products. The electronic database was made. It contains the description of accessible relevant datasets (format, spatial define, spatial and time resolution etc.). The basic vegetation indices (NDVI, TVI, SR, transformation Tasseled Cap) were computed for chosen areas and the ways the vegetation can be separated and classified in the satellite imagery are verified. For this purpose, the thresholding of histograms of values of the individual vegetation indices was used. As there are close correlations between the computed vegetation indices (correlation coefficients are more than 0.9) they can be used as an input of the principal component analysis. The unsupervised classification Isodata was used to classify these re-computed vegetation indices. Both of these methods are usable, but there are certain limitations which arise from the spatial resolution of the data, the occurrence of the mixels and the similar spectral characteristics of constituent surfaces.
