Analysis of public service broadcasters‘ webpages for children in the EU

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce vychází z teoretických pojednání o dětském publiku a aplikuje hlavní myšlenky na současný problém oslovení dětských televizních diváků v kyberprostoru. Objektem výzkumu jsou televizní webové stránky, dobře vystihující podstatu mediální konvergence, propojení televize a internetu. Téma reaguje na aktuální snahu České televize vytvořit vlastní webové stránky pro děti a mládež v rámci své komunikační strategie nazvané „Rok dítěte“. Empirická část práce mapuje dětské webové stránky televizí veřejné služby ve všech zemích Evropské unie, čímž nejen vytváří inspirační zdroj pro český projekt, ale zároveň má cenný mezinárodní přesah. Hlavní výzkumná otázka: „Jakým způsobem oslovují evropské televize veřejné služby dětské publikum skrze webové stránky?“ byla zodpovězena z hlediska existence vs. absence speciálního webu pro děti v jednotlivých zemích, přístupu tvůrců k věkové diferenciaci publika a strukturálního zpracování webů. Významnou částí práce je obsahová analýza prvků na úvodních stránkách 14 webů, které jsme klasifikovali jako samostatné stránky pro děti (mladšího) školního věku. Definovali jsme 18 kategorií uživatelů, které se tvůrci skrze odkazy na stránkách snaží oslovit. Závěr nabízí přehled obecných tendencí i specifik jednotlivých webů a především zhodnocení slabých a silných aspektů stránek, které by měly sloužit jako inspirace pro tvorbu dětského webu České televize. V neposlední řadě práce svým unikátním tématem otevírá možnost nového přístupu k výzkumu dětského publika v kyberprostoru.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis provides the reader with an outline of theoretical work about children audience and applies its main concepts to the current problem of attracting children television viewers moving into the cyberspace. In the inquiry we concentrated on the television websites representing the convergence of television and the Internet. By this topic we react to the concerns of Czech Television which is currently trying to develop its own children‘s website. The empirical part of this work maps children’s public service television websites in the countries of the EU. Therefore, it serves not only as a valuable source for the Czech case, but also has a broader international scope. We asked the main research question: ‘By what means the public service televisions‘ websites in the EU attracts children audience?‘ We comprise to our response the overview of existing (or absenting) children’s websites in each country, way of differentiating the websites accorging to the age specifications of its assumed users, and the aspects of structure and appearance. The method of content analysis was applied to 14 homepages of stand-alone websites for the audience of (primary) school children. 18 categories of users addressed through the contained links were defined. The conclusion offers an outline of general trends as well as characteristics of individual websites. Also, the strengths and weaknesses were identified which should help in designing the Czech TV website. This thesis also contributes to the academic discourse by opening a unique topic for further investigation of children audience in the cyberspace.
