The position of religion in the Persian and the Roman Empire and its influence on politics in the selected period - comparison

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je porovnat vztah mezi náboženstvím a politikou v Římské říši (v letech 284-395) a v Perské říši (v letech 224-379). Práce odpovídá na otázky: Jaký je rozdíl v přístupu vládnoucích elit k dominantnímu náboženství v obou říších a k náboženstvím méně významným (a k jejich stoupencům)? Jaký je rozdíl ve vlivu duchovenstva na politiku těchto říší? Hlavní metodou v práci je komparace. Práce je rozdělena na čtyři kapitoly. První kapitola je teoretický úvod do teorie impérií. Druhá kapitola představuje obě analyzované říše a jejich historii ve vybraném období. Třetí kapitola popisuje náboženství, která jsou předmětem výzkumu. V poslední kapitole jsou sesbírány informace o vztahu panovníků k jednotlivým náboženstvím. V mé práci jsem zjistila, že přístup vládnoucích elit k dominantnímu náboženství byl v obou říších obvykle poměrně podobný. Přístup Sásánovské říše k náboženským menšinám byl tolerantnější než přístup Římské říše. A v Římské říši byla katolická církev a její členové schopna vytvořit větší vliv na politiku než zoroastrovští kněží v Sásánovské Persii.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to compare the relationship between religion and politics in the Roman Empire (between the years 284-395) and the Persian Empire (between the years 224-379). The thesis answers the questions: What is the difference in the approach of the ruling elites to the dominant religion in both empires and to the religions which are less important (and to their followers)? What is the difference in the influence of the clergy on politics in these empires? The main method of the thesis is comparison. The thesis is divided into four chapters. The first chapter is a theoretical introduction to the theory of empires. The second chapter presents both analyzed empires and their history in the selected period. Third chapter is describing religions that are the subject of research. In the last chapter there is collected information about the relationship of particular rulers to each religion. In my thesis I found that access of the ruling elite to the dominant religion in both empires is usually quite similar. Sasanian Empire's attitude towards religious minorities was more tolerant than the Roman Empire. And in the Roman Empire the Catholic Church and its members were able to make a greater impact on politics than Zoroastrian priests in the Sasanian Persia.
