Social workers of tertiary drug prevention in the field in Prague and burnout syndrom

Abstract:

Práce zkoumá problematické pracovní oblasti terénních sociálních pracovníků s uživateli drog, které mohou potenciálně vést k syndromu vyhoření. Jejím cílem je zjistit rozložení vyhoření u streetworkerů v Praze a specifikovat konkrétní rizikové oblasti dané profese. Práce vychází jak z kvantitativního šetření, které proběhlo ve třech organizacích v Praze, tak z kvalitativních rozhovorů, které práci doplňují, prohlubují a konkretizují výsledky. Výsledky ukázaly, že streetworkeři v Praze nejsou vyhořelí. Avšak téměř čtvrtina zúčastněných překročila kritickou hranici alespoň na jedné ze tří škál syndromu vyhoření (vyčerpání, cynismus, pracovní výkonnost), což může být považováno, při udržení stávajících podmínek, za prediktor syndromu vyhoření. Pracovníci s vyšší mírou vyhoření vnímali jako problematické především oblasti kontroly a hodnot. Pracovníkům nevyhovovala zejména malá možnost kontrolovat finance, potřebné množství materiálu a systém vedení. Zajímavé bylo zjištění, že pracovníci tolerují mnohé z toho, co je jim nekomfortní, pokud o daných podmínkách věděli již při nástupu do zaměstnání a měli tak možnost se pro ně dobrovolně rozhodnout. Tuto situaci řeší jejím vnímáním jako neměnné a strategií neočekávání změny k lepšímu. V oblasti hodnot se ukázala jako důležitá souhra mezi osobními hodnotami pracovníka a jeho motivací vykonávat profesi streetworkera.

Abstract:

This study is focused on problematic areas of the worklife of outreach workers working with drug addicts, which can lead to burnout. The aim is to detect the burnout distribution across the population of outreach workers in Prague and to find the specific problematic areas of their worklife. The study is build firstly at the quantitative research with data collected in three organisations in Prague; secondly on qualitative approach, which makes the study more focused and specified. Results showed that outreach workers in Prague are not burnout-out. However, almost quarter of them exceeded at least one of the three critical burnout scales border (exhaustion, cynicism, inefficacy), which can refer to early indicators of burnout. The part of respondents with higher score on burnout–engagement continuum perceived problematically especially areas of control and values. There are three areas that do not suit to the respondents: the absence of opportunity to control finance, the quality and number of necessary work staff and the system of leadership. The interesting fact is that respondents tolerate a lot of uncomfortable situations as far as they had known about it before taking the job and could make the decision by themselves. Respondents solve this situation by a strategy of not expecting any changes to better state. Areas of values show how important is the correlation between personal values and the motivation to do the job of outreach worker.
