The text in musical works. A translatological analysis using the example of the operatic surtitles in Georges Bizets Carmen.

Abstract:

This thesis seeks to analyse translation for music theatre with the main focus on opera surtitles. Firstly, this phenomenon is described within a theoretical framework where terminology and definitions are explained. It offers a short historical review of opera practices that led to the establishment of the surtitle devices in opera houses. Besides, it explores various methods of surtitles projection and the situation in the Czech Republic. Furthermore, a comparison is made between the opera surtitles and regular subtitles which can be seen in the movies. Their differences and similarities are further examined. Lastly, in the theoretical part, it discusses the process of creating opera surtitles and the existing conventions. Within the scope of this study, the German surtitles for the opera Carmen by Georges Bizet were created. The process of creating surtitles is described, as well as the analysis of the source text according to Christiane Nord. The translation method is always in accordance with the requirements of the cultural institution. The results of the research studies in this area are also considered. In the end, the list of translation problems is presented. The aim of this thesis is to make an overview of the whole phenomenon of opera surtitles and to offer one possible translation process of creating surtitles as well.

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá překládáním pro hudební divadlo, přičemž se soustředí hlavně na operní titulky. Tento fenomén popisuje podrobně nejprve z teoretického hlediska, kde přibližuje pojmosloví a definice zkoumaného jevu. Nabízí taktéž krátký historický exkurz do praxe uvádění oper, která vedla k zavedení titulkovacích zařízení do operních domů. Přibližuje taktéž různé způsoby projekce titulků a situaci v České republice. Taktéž se zabývá rozdíly a společnými znaky operních titulků a běžných titulků, které můžeme vidět například ve filmech. V neposlední řadě v teoretické části pak pojednává o procesu tvorby operních titulků a o stávajících konvencích. V rámci této diplomové práce byly vytvořeny titulky v němčině pro operu Carmen od Georges Bizeta pro Janáčkovu operu Národního divadla Brno. Je popsán proces tvorby titulků a rovněž analýza výchozího textu podle Christiane Nordové. Překladatelská metoda je vždy v souladu s požadavky kulturní instituce. Zohledněny jsou přitom také výsledky bádání v uvedené oblasti. Práce představuje i výčet překladatelských problému. Cílem této práce je zmapovat celý fenomén operních titulků a zároveň nabídnout i možný překladatelský postup při jejich tvorbě.
