Candidate Evaluation and the Vote Choice in the Czech Republic

Abstract:

Cílem předkládané magisterské práce je zodpovědět otázku, jakou roli hraje (vrcholový) kandidát ve volebním rozhodování českého voliče. Práce vychází ze sociálně psychologického modelu volebního chování a z teorie politické personalizace. Na příkladu voleb do Poslanecké sněmovny z roku 2013 zkoumáme, jestli voliče při jeho volbě přesvědčily dlouhodobé (stranická identifikace) nebo krátkodobé (orientace na kandidáta a na téma) faktory. Data jsme sesbírali pomocí hloubkových rozhovorů s celkem dvanácti respondenty. Těmi jsou mladší a starší voliči ČSSD a ANO. Rozdílné politické subjekty byly vybrány záměrně. Poskytují totiž jedinečnou příležitost sledovat individuální roli kandidáta do hloubky. Součástí práce je i zaměření se na hodnocení vlastností vrcholových kandidátů ČSSD a ANO.

Abstract:

The theses presented aims to answer the question, what is the role of the (top) candidate in the voting decision of Czech voters. Theoretical concepts of this work are based on social-psychological model of voting behaviour and on the personalisation of politics theory. On the example of the 2013 Chamber of Deputies elections we investigate whether voters were convinced the long-term (party identification) or short (candidate-voting, issue voting) factors. The data given were collected through interviews with twelve respondents – with younger and older voters of the Czech Social Democratic Party (ČSSD) and the ANO movement. Different political actors were chosen intently. They provide a unique opportunity to observe the role of candidates individually and in depth. A part of the thesis is focused on the assessment of top candidates of the Czech Social Democratic Party and ANO.
