Capital structure and firm performance

Abstract:

The goal of the submitted thesis Capital structure and firm performance is to examine an influence of capital structure of company on its profitability. This notion is researched through selective retrieval of suitable indicators but also through the utilization of respective econometric model. The first part of this thesis is devoted to the research of concept of capital structure via reporting system of accounting data US GAAP and simultaneously there are described concepts which are connected to the problematics of capital structure. Diploma thesis follows with the research of capital structure theories, which will be also examined to the possible extent in the practical part. Besides that, there are also described companies in a dataset, which were a part of American stock market index S&P 500 in last 15 years. In the last part, there are created panel models, based on which the influence of debt indicators on indicators of profitability is evaluated. On the basis of panel regression results and individual view of the author, one of the most plausible capital structure theories is selected.

Abstract:

Predmetom diplomovej práce Štruktúra kapitálu a ziskovosť podniku je skúmať vplyv kapitálovej štruktúry podniku na jeho ziskovosť. Táto myšlienka je skúmaná prostredníctvom selektívneho výberu vhodných ukazovateľov a použitia patričného ekonometrického modelu. V prvej časti práce je preskúmaný koncept kapitálovej štruktúry prostredníctvom systému reportovania účtovných dát US GAAP a zároveň sú v nej uvedené pojmy, ktoré s problematikou kapitálovej štruktúry súvisia. Diplomová práca pokračuje definovaním teórií kapitálovej štruktúry, ktoré budú do určitej miery preskúmané v praktickej časti. V nej sú najskôr popísané firmy v databáze, ktoré boli v posledných 15 rokoch radené do amerického akciového indexu S&P 500. V záverečnej časti sú vytvorené panelové modely, na základe ktorých je vyhodnotený vplyv ukazovateľov zadlženosti na ukazovatele ziskovosti. Na základe výsledkov panelovej regresie a individuálneho pohľadu autora je vybraná teória kapitálovej štruktúry, ktorá najvierohodnejšie popisuje realitu.
