The Possibilities of (Not Only) Functionalist Translation of the Novel Lidice by Heinrich Mann.

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá otázkou, zda je již možné přeložit satirický román Lidice od Heinricha Manna po více než sedmdesáti letech do češtiny, protože ve čtyřicátých letech byly silné obavy, že by román u nás nebyl kladně přijat. Teoretická část práce je zaměřena především na translatologii. Přibližuje pojmy translát, překladatel a jednotlivé překladatelské koncepce, dále vymezuje pojmy interpretace, performativ, úkoly literárního historika podle Felixe Vodičky a věnuje se literární onomastice. V praktické části nejprve uvádí informace, které je dobré znát před překládáním – autorův životopis, děj knihy i její interpretaci, historické reálie, genealogii díla a jeho umělecké vzory. Práce obsahuje i zprávy z New York Times o nástupu Reinharda Heydricha, o atentátu na jeho osobu a všechny následné zprávy o dění v protektorátu až po dopadení atentátníků 18. června 1942. Následně řeší překlad názvu, vlastních jmen či českých slov v německém textu a na základě úryvků a několika kapitol předkládá překladové strategie s ohledem na různé možné žánrové zařazení knihy.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the question whether it is already possible to translate a satirical novel by Heinrich Mann Lidice into Czech after more than seventy years, as in the 1940s there were valid concerns that the novel would not be acceptable in Czech Republic. The theoretical part focuses mainly on Translation Studies; it explains the terms translation, translator and particular concepts of translation. It also explains the terms interpretation, performatives and tasks of literary historian defined by Felix Vodička, and it focuses on literary onomastics. In the practical part, at first information about what is useful to know before translating a text is provided. This includes the author's biography, the plot of the book and its interpretation, historical facts, genealogy of the work and its artistic models. The thesis also works with reports published in the New York Times about the new deputy protector Reinhard Heydrich, his assassination and all subsequent news about events in the Protectorate until the capture of assassins on June 18, 1942. The thesis further deals with the possible solutions of the title´s translation, translation of Czech proper names or words in German text and based on particular extracts and several chapters, translation strategies are presented with regard to various possible genre categorizations of the novel.
