Celebritization of Czech politics. An analysis of Senate elections (1996 - 2017)

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce si klade za úkol zkoumat fenomén celebritizace politiky v českém prostředí prostřednictvím kvantitativních nástrojů. Konkrétně se zabývá kandidaturou celebrit do Senátu Parlamentu České republiky v letech 1996–2017. Jako hlavní teoretické východisko používá typologií Johna Streeta. Na základě statisticky zpracovaných dat z vybraných volebních let je cílem práce zjistit, jaký poměr kandidátů tvoří při volbách do horní komory celebrity, zda jsou to častěji muži nebo ženy, z jaké společenské sféry do politiky přicházejí, za jaké politické strany kandidují a zda jsou jejími členy. Poslední analýza se zaměří na úspěšnost celebrit kandidátů. Sesbíraná data jsou zasazena do kontextu daného volebního období a následně jsou z dat induktivní metodou identifikovány obecné trendy.

Abstract:

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to examine the phenomenon of celebritization in politics in the Czech environment through quantitative tools. In order to be more specific the thesis is focused on candidacy of celebrities in the Senate of the Parliament of the Czech Republic in 1996-2017. As the main theoretical basis is used typology of John Street. Based on statistically processed data from selected electoral years, the goal of the thesis is to find out what proportion of candidates elected to the Upper chamber are celebrity and also whether they are more often men or women, what social sphere they come from, what political parties they stand for and whether they are members of that political party. Focus of the last analysis is on the success of celebrity candidates. The collected data are inserted into the context of a given election period and subsequently an inductive method is applied for identifying general trends.
