Family relationships in Amy Tan's novel The Joy Luck Club

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis is focused on the analysis of the novel The Joy Luck Club (1989) by Amy Tan (1952), American novelist of Chinese origin. Tan is perceived by the contemporary literary critics as one of the most successful American authors of Asian origin. The book consists of sixteen stories that are narrated in America by two generations of Chinese immigrants. This thesis is centred around the key themes which appear in the book repeatedly. In particular, there is the mother-daughter relationship which is often complicated and includes themes such as language barrier or the search for the lost identity of the main characters. In the stories Tan also touches the relationships of the main protagonists with the opposite sex. In her work Tan captures images from everyday life, thereby providing a deeper insight into the sociological aspects such as alienation and eradication of the immigrants and their daughters. The intention of this thesis is to display how the immigration affects the life of the main protagonists. Furthermore, the thesis concentrates on Tan's artistic style. It also tries to reveal what exactly makes Tan an extraordinary author who has gained the prominent position in contemporary Asian American literature.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá analýzou románu Klub radosti a štěstí (1989) americké autorky čínského původu Amy Tan (1952). V současné době je Tan kritikou vnímána jako jedna z nejúspěšnějších amerických autorek asijského původu. Kniha je tvořena šestnácti příběhy, vyprávěnými v Americe dvěma generacemi čínských emigrantek. Práce se zaměřuje na klíčová témata díla. Jedná se zejména o komplikovaný vztah matky a dcery, který v sobě zahrnuje problematiku jazykové bariéry či hledání ztracené identity hlavních postav. V jednotlivých příbězích se autorka zabývá také vztahem hlavních hrdinek k opačnému pohlaví. Tan ve svém díle zachycuje obrazy z každodenního života, a tak dovoluje nahlédnout hlouběji do sociologických aspektů jako odcizení a vykořenění emigrantek a jejich dcer. Cílem práce je prostřednictvím literární analýzy ukázat, jakým způsobem se emigrace dotýká hlavních postav. Práce se dále zaměřuje na umělecký styl Tan. Pokouší se také odhalit, co z Amy Tan dělá výjimečnou autorku, která zaujímá jedno z předních míst v současné asijsko-americké literatuře.
