Classified Communication, Czech Cinema and Censorship, the Case of Barrandov Film Studios between 1962-1970.

Abstract:

Disertační práce zkoumá systém cenzury v Československu v letech 1962 až 1970 na příkladu Filmového studia Barrandov. Základním cílem práce je objasnit strukturu komplikovaných vztahů mezi Československým filmem, Filmovým studiem Barrandov a reprezentanty cenzury, a to v kontextu dynamických politických, společenských či kulturních změn, které jsou pro období šedesátých let příznačné. Práce se zabývá cenzurou jako procesem komunikace ve smyslu vzájemných jednání zástupců filmařů a cenzurního aparátu (Hlavní správa tiskového dohledu, Ústřední publikační správa, Ideologická komise ÚV KSČ a další). Kromě pochopení organizace cenzury ve vztahu k české kinematografii šedesátých let práce odkrývá i některé důležité detaily týkající se fungování filmového studiového systému v tehdejším Československu.

Abstract:

The thesis uses Barrandov Film Studios as an example to study censorship system in Czechoslovakia from 1962 to 1970. The main goal of the thesis is to clarify the complicated structure and relationships of Czechoslovakian Film, Barrandov Film Studios and the censorship representatives in the context of the rather dynamic political, social or cultural changes so typical for the 60s. The censorship is viewed as a process of communication among representatives of filmmakers and the censorship authorities (i.e. Press Supervision Head Office, Central Publication Office, Ideology Board of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia etc.). The paper as such not only provides insight in censorship mechanisms in relation to Czech 60’s cinema, it also unveils important details of the film studio system in Czechoslovakia at that time.
