Sediment budget in glacial and proglacial zones of polar regions

Abstract:

Dizertační práce popisuje na různých časových škálách vývoj krajiny a procesy vedoucí k aktuálnímu stavu přírodního prostředí polárních oblastí. Geograficky se práce zaměřuje na obě polární oblasti, tedy Arktidu i Antarktidu. Zvláštní důraz je kladen na oblast Ostrova Jamese Rosse (Antarktida) a centrální Špicberky (Arktida), kde se v posledních letech autor zúčastnil několika expedic. Práce přináší nové poznatky o fungování přenosu hmoty v proglaciálním systému studovaných území. To zahrnuje jak vývoj samotného ledovce po skončení malé doby ledové, depozici minerálních částic na povrchu ledovce, jejich další transport glacifluviálním systémem povodí až po vliv přínosu tohoto materiálu na pobřežní ekosystém. Znalost současných a minulých přírodních procesů hrajících rozhodující roli pro fungování polárního prostředí nám umožňuje lépe odhadovat možný vývoj v budoucnosti. To platí především o prostředí, které je v posledních desetiletích vystaveno stále intenzivnějšímu vlivu člověka a zvyšujícímu se tlaku na přírodní prostředí.

Abstract:

The thesis describes evolution of the polar landscape and processes leading to the actual shape of the landscape on different timescales. Geographically it focuses on both the Arctic and the Antarctic region with special emphasis on Svalbard and James Ross Island where extensive field campaigns have been carried out during the last years. It brings new information on the sediment budget processes of the glacier related environments. This includes evolution of a glacier after its maximum extent at the end of the Little Ice Age, aeolian deposition of mineral material on a glacier surface, its further transport through the glaciofluvial system of the proglacial water streams and finally shaping of the coastal environment thanks to input of such material into the marine ecosystem. Knowledge of the past and recent environmental processes can facilitate our understanding of possible future evolution of the both polar regions. This is true especially with respect to the acceleration of human induced climatic changes occurring in the vulnerable polar ecosystem during the last decades.
