Factors Affecting Escalations of the Greco - Turkish Conflict

Abstract:

Hlavním cílem magisterské práce „Faktory ovlivňující eskalace řecko-tureckého konfliktu“ je určit rizikové faktory, které se mohou podílet na eskalacích tohoto mezinárodního konfliktu v Egejském moři. Výzkum je postaven na induktivní metodě. Analyzuje tři největší eskalace egejského konfliktu v letech 1976, 1987 a 1996 a zaměřuje se přitom jak na vnitřní, tak i vnější faktory. Z vnitřních faktorů zkoumá vnitropolitické prostředí, ekonomickou situaci a výdaje na zbrojení, z faktorů vnějších vztahy obou zemí k USA a EHS/EU. Provedený výzkum za nejvíce rizikovou určil ekonomickou situaci, ale určitou roli mohou hrát i další ze zkoumaných faktorů.

Abstract:

The main objective of the master thesis “Factors Affecting Escalations of the Greco-Turkish Conflict” is to determine risk factors which could have a negative impact on the escalations of interstate conflict in the Aegean Sea. The research is based on an inductive method. It analyzes three of the biggest conflict escalations in the Aegean Sea (year 1976, 1987 and 1996) and focuses on the domestic political settings, economic issues, and defense spending. It will also focus on the relations of both states with the U.S. and EEC/EU. According to the research the economic issues played the main role in the Aegean escalations, but additional factors seem to be influential as well.
