Figural Folk Sculptures (made until 1918) in Collections Documenting the Area of the Beskid Mountains and the Beskid Foothills

Abstract:

Cílem magisterské práce je důsledná identifikace a deskripce muzejních sbírkových předmětů, které lze definovat jako produkty lidového, pololidového a neprofesionálního řezbářství. Těžiště výzkumu i následného vyhodnocení bude zaměřeno na figurální plastiky vytvořené do 1. světové války v Beskydech a Podbeskydí. Beskydy a i širší Podbeskydí představují v tomto ohledu specifickou oblast, pro níž je i v současnosti charakteristické velké množství řezbářů. Pro tyto tvůrce se stal tento příhraniční hornatý kraj, ve kterém se dlouho prolínaly archaické formy tradičního života s dominantním průmyslem, specifickým inspiračním stimulem. Zásadní rozvoj neprofesionálního řezbářství nastal po 1. světové válce, a v nových formách pokračoval v období po 2. světové válce. Muzea dokumentující tento prostor mají ve svých sbírkách řadu drobných dřevěných plastik jak historických, tak současných. V muzeích se ovšem vyskytují dřevořezby vykazující typické znaky charakteristické pro neprofesionální tvorbu, které svým původem sahají před 1. světovou válku. Motivy řezeb po první světové válce začaly reflektovat větší měrou každodenní život, ale starší plastiky jsou především spojené s náboženskými tématy. Ve své práci se budu věnovat právě této starší vrstvě figurálních dřevěných plastik a jejich dokumentací v muzejních sbírkách institucí zabývajících se beskydským prostorem. Práce bude také reflektovat problematiku lidovosti těchto plastik a neprofesionalitou jejich tvůrců, což bývá obtížné a hranice mezi lidovým a profesionálním řezbářstvím se často prolínají. Magisterská práce bude tyto údaje analyzovat a porovnávat jakou funkci plnily tyto předměty v minulosti a jakou plní jako muzeálie ve sbírkách coby součást tezaurů i v rámci prezentačních počinů. Hlavním výstupem by měl být komplexní přehled (formou katalogu) o drobných figurálních řezbách z období před 1. světovou válkou v českých, polských a slovenských muzeí, které se věnují oblasti Beskyd a Podbeskydí.

Abstract:

The objective of this master's thesis is a thorough identification and description of objects from museum collections, which can be defined as products of folk, semi-folk and nonprofessional carving. The focus of the research and subsequent assessment will be figural sculptures created till the World War I in the Beskids and the Moravian-Silesian Foothills. In this respect the Beskids and the broader Moravian-Silesian Foothills are a specific area, for which a large number of carvers is still characteristic. This borderline mountainous region, in which archaic forms of traditional life have been for long merging with the dominant industry, has become a specific inspirational stimulus for those craftsmen. The fundamental development of nonprofessional woodcarving took place after the First World War, and continued in new forms after the Second World War. Museums documenting this space have collections of small wooden sculptures, both historical and contemporary. However, in the museums there are also woodcarvings showing typical features characteristic for nonprofessional art that have been created before the First World War. The motifs of woodcarvings after the First World War began to reflect more on the everyday life, whereat older sculptures are primarily associated with religious themes. In my thesis I shall focus on this older layer of figural wooden sculptures and their documentation in museum collections of institutions aiming at the Beskids space. In the thesis I shall also reflect on the issue of folkness of these sculptures and the unprofessional nature of their creators, which is sometimes difficult to differentiate as the borderline between folk and professional woodcarving is often blurred. The master's thesis will analyze these data and compare the function of these objects in the past and in the contemporary museum collections as parts of thesauri and presentations. The main outcome should be a comprehensive overview (in the form of a catalogue) of small figural carvings from the period before the First World War in the Czech, Polish and Slovak museums, dealing with the area of the Beskids and the Moravian-Silesian Foothills.
