Gender Discrimination in the Market and the Workplace: Case Study of UNICEF in the Czech Republic

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis investigates gender discrimination in the workplace through a case study of the Czech branch of the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) in Prague. Using a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative and quantitative research techniques, the study aimed to assess the prevalence of gender discrimination and analyze the working environment within the organization. The findings indicate that UNICEF’s Prague branch maintains a relatively healthy and inclusive work environment, with an unbalanced gender representation skewed towards women. The majority of survey participants reported no experience of gender discrimination at UNICEF, contrasting with more frequent discrimination in their previous workplaces. Despite the positive findings, the study suggests improving gender diversity by increasing male representation within the organization to enhance the diversity of ideas and approaches. Furthermore, it is recommended to expand the study to other UNICEF branches or comparable non-governmental organizations in Prague to determine whether the observed situation is unique to this branch or reflects a broader trend.
