Secularization and differentiated society in the sociology of religion by Niklas Luhmann

Abstract:

Sociologie náboženství v mnoha případech znamená diskuzi a rozvíjení myšlenek o procesu sekularizace nebo o měnící se roli, kterou náboženství v současné společnosti přebírá. Předložená práce se opírá o několik klasických autorů, jakými jsou Durkheim a Parsons. Opomenuti nejsou ani Berger a Laermans, jejichž koncepty umožňují hlubší vhled do logiky argumentace. Předložená práce přináší stručný přehled toho, čím sekularizace je (v pojetí Niklase Luhmanna podle jeho knihy Die Religion der Gesellschaft), aby následně bylo možné znovu definovat vztah mezi společností a náboženstvím s poukazem na jeho vnitřní logiku, binární kód imanence / transcendence. Argumentace se opírá o Luhmannovu zásadní volbu: posun od akce ke komunikaci. Práce vychází z předpokladu teorie systémů, ve kterém nachází uplatnění koncept autopoiesis, a takto v souladu s pojetím Niklase Luhmanna přistupuje k popisu náboženství za použití sociologických pojmů. Posun od akce ke komunikaci představuje obtížné téma – svět a jeho stav neurčitosti. Teorie systémů náboženství se pokouší objasnit, jak převést neurčité do určitého, a k tomu Luhmann používá termín transcendence binárního kódu imanence / transcendence. Na úrovni pojmů nacházím vztah mezi uvažováním zevnitř systému náboženství a Luhmannovou sociologií. Luhmannův způsob argumentace se odkazuje na teorii systémů, která pomocí autopoietických procesů vytváří identitu systému a od jednání se posouvá ke komunikaci.

Abstract:

The sociology of religion commonly deals with promoting ideas and discussions about a secularization or shifting the role that the religion plays in a contemporary society. The thesis introduces classic authors Durkheim as well as Parsons and also Berger and Laermans whose ideas present the intrinsic logic of argumentation. The thesis starts with a short overview where is described what secularization really means (at least according to Luhmann and his book Die Religion der Gesellschaft). The relationship between religion and society with respect to intrinsic logic of religion, immanence / transcendence is re-defined subsequently. Luhmann’s point of view from action to communication is a base of the argumentation applied in the thesis. The theoretical base of the system of theory where the autopoiesis concept is applied and in accordance with Niklas Luhmann concept the description of religion based on sociological terms is realized. The shift from action to communication introduces a very difficult topic – the world in its indefiniteness. The system of theory of religion attempts to clarify how to convert the indefinite to the certain. Luhmann employs the term transcendence of binary encoding immanence / transcendence to clarify the problem. At the level of ideas it has been found reciprocity between reflections inside the system of religion and Luhmann’s sociology. Luhmann’s method of argumentation refers to the systems theory. The systems theory with application of autopoietic process creates the identity of system and the shift from action to communication.
